I gather this shooting discipline with centrefire handguns used to be a roaring sport in the western provinces.
How come this excellent shooting sport died off fellas?
Any ideas??

I just recently took up 50 meter pistol ISSF, and metallic silouette is about the only other handgun sport I think I would like, with my trusty DW in tow.

Before my time , But from what I understand there used to be a "sily wet" range in just about every small town in Saskatchewan. Now as far as I know we(Saskatoon) have the only active range in the province? We hold one match a month during the summer , Last sunday of the month . It sure would be nice to see a more active participation level , But i fear that the older shooters are just getting older and the younger people are just more interested in everyting other than shooting .

Every Second Sunday here in Cranbrook, Especially in the winter. We use smallbore rifle targets 2/5 at reduced range 12m,17m,22m,27m to cover the actual sight radii of the reduced range/smaller targets vs IMHSA 100 range

Run what you brung for pistol, BUT iron sights only and they must be factory issue or available as an option for your gun (no ghost rings/peeps allowed)

COF is unsupported standing.

5 bucks per event, 3 relays, and hot dogs and coffee are provided at lunch.

:)

Here in Quebec it died out in the mid 90s. Back then I was in the Director's Board of one of the major clubs of the Montreal area & we had many different pistol shooting activities going. This one died as there was no shooters to take over from the elders, same for the ``Action Shooting`` games like the falling plates & moving target (the great years of the USA Bianchi Cup !!)

During the same period (1995 if I remember correctly) the Provincial Office issued regulations for outdoor shooting ranges...Of the 100 or so Shooting Clubs in Quebec only a handfull survived...

Pretty much impossible in MB with what range we're allowed to shoot handguns at (50y or less). Selkirk used to be 100y for pistols, but that ended while I was a member there (technically it was supposed to have ended a couple years earlier, but was never enforced).

Whitehorse still has the full pistol silhouette range and i think now about 5-8 shooters left. Yes it is dying a slow death. Why? I guess if your under 50 it's about as much fun as watching paint dry. Ive tried it a few times and don't like it at all.
Everyone i know that shoots pistols wants to shoot speed steel, steel challenge or IPSC type stuff. Times change and the future is action shooting.

Not trying to be harsh but this is what i see and hear.

A few of us still shoot it here, both big bore and smallbore, but just can't seem to get the younger shooters interested, .....they'd rather go for volume than accuracy and don't want the challenge of 200 yard accuracy with a handgun!!

Just have to sell the younger shooters that IHMSA shooting is all about (horse power) I shoot a 14" TC .445 supermag with 300 grain cast boolits @ 1550 fps and beleive you me , it's horsepower !

Horsepower is fun, I've been shooting full house .308 with 220 grainers for 30 years in my XP, Of course, I also like double rifles in the Nitro Express class for the things that eat'cha!

If you have the choice that's great and I concur.
Some of us do not have this option nearby.

I would love to be able to give it a go. As I stated, 50y would seriously suck with any decent silhouette gun. Even my 10.5" Super Black Hawk is boring at 50y. When I bought it, I loved shooting clays at 100y, I wasn't 100% by any means, but more than enough to keep it fun. A 445 Supermag or 308 handgun, at 50y, would be like a nitro Methane Dragster, in a 100y dash.

The CFO claims it is for safety reasons that they don't allow long range handgun shooting, however when I was a member at Selkirk, the 200y rifle range had a lower berm than the 100y pistol range. And I guarantee an over the berm shot from a rifle is going WAY further than one from a handgun. It's just one more for them to put further restrictions on the handgun crowd through policy.

In Quesnel we have a couple CF shoots each summer but they are just at the static gongs on the range at 100, 150 and 200m... We have 2 sets of IMHSA regulation steel sillouettes and it would be nice to get them back in use for handguns....

it is a seriously fun sport, especially in the winter with .22lr No brass to pick out of the snow, easy to set up, and it gives gun guys and gals something to keep their trigger fingers from getting rusty in the winter time.

As an IPSC shooter it really helps one sharpen their sighting technique.

Silhouette died

Sad .

Full size originated in mexico because of the distances available.

Miniaturized for AmeriKa and Kanada but still fun.

Died off because of the hassle of the steel and re-setting up, and now by the CFO idiots requiring bunkers for outdoors.

Unfortunate since indoor pistol is easy to do - less walking.
