Pistol primers in rifle cases

Is there a need or reason to use large pistol primers in low velocity 3030 cases. I have used them behind 14.5 GR IMR4227 and 170GR cast bullets as suggested as a starting low velocity round.
Would anyone care to give me the therory behind the pistol primers in this application or should I just use reg primers.

Use regular primers. Large rifle and large pistol primers aren't the same size.

They are the same diameter, but are .006" shorter in height. Some of us who load BPCRs use them with Black Powder or their softer ingnition flame. In a smokeless application however, chamber pressure would cause the primer cup to rupture. I can't remember offhand what that number is. 30,000 c.u.p. rings a bell, but DO NOT take my word for it please. Officially recommending you use large rifle primers.

Pistol primers aren't quite as deep, but that doesn't matter for using them in rifle cases.
I've used them in 30-30, 22 Hornet and 45-70. Actually, my best 45-70 groups have been when I used pistol primers, but it may just have been coincidence. However, they work and work well.
The 30-30 has about the same pressure rating at full power, as does a 44 magnum, so pressure with them shouldn't be a concern, especially in lighter loads.

I've used them for decades for lighter loads with no problems. There was a theory that in trying to duplicate the very accurate cast bullet loads of the Scheutzen shooters, that we can duplicate everything but the primers. The use of pistol primers in these loads, gives softer ignition and is closer to the ones used a century ago.
