So, I had a dumb idea today. I primed a rifle case with a large pistol primer. I only did one just to experiment. Any issues or cautions on the plan? I noticed that the primer is slightly further down into the primer pocket but I think it will still be met with the firing pin. Dumb idea or ????

Since rifle primers are typically harder my guess is you run a risk of piercing the primer which won't do your bolt face any favours. Depending on the primer used the pistol primer may not be as 'hot' so you may not get complete ignition of the powder charge. Different primers have different brissance levels so this will vary with the primer brand.

It will work, depending on the application. I've used them in a few different rifle loads with no problem, although it was with smaller charges of faster powder. Wouldn't try it for the once in a lifetime hunt or safari, but for fooling around and not high pressure loads, definitely.
The primer that I'm trying is Winchester large pistol "for standard or magnum pistol loads: Just thought I'd do an experiment. I've had them around a while the price sticker says $3.79,

Shoot away. I've done thousands of those in everything from 222 to 30-06 with hot loads.
I've never had any of them pierced, but there was some cratering/flattening on close to max loads.
I had several thousand large pistol and small pistol primers to use up. All were magnum.
As far as seating depth, depended on the individual case they were being loaded into.
