Engaging the thumb safety will also prevent the slide from going out of battery during a struggle. But to fire the gun, the safety needs to be off.

Theoretically, as I don't practice these things, even with a standoff device installed, what's to prevent the BG from reaching over the top, or under the gun to disable it momentarily if he's that gutsy, or you're too slow.
 
Yes but in a quick "hand grab" situation I think you have the mechanical advantage. Even if the first shot misses, I suspect the intuder won't be hanging on long and will allow a follow up shot. Of course this is all theory.
