pistol training

I used to help my father-in-law on his trap line back in the 70's and 80-'s. I shot probably 50 beaver for him after his eyes went away. Buck beavers can get very big and very heavy! Lost art really. Nice to see there are folks still practicing the business.

How has TDC not posted in this thread yet? The number 1 advocate of professional training, and nothing? I'm not trolling, I'm very interested in which specific training courses and schools he recommends.

I stacked with KevinB in 2005 ...by Osmosis I have now learned all there is to learn ...when "The Boland" learns something new it is metaphysically transferred to his many minions ...back to Wii duck hunting...

basic safety trainning only

If you're looking for basic safety training only they're called the fundamental four, you don't need to attend a professional school to learn them and/or apply them.

You called??? I say train with as many schools as you can. Training with one school doesn't offer much variety in either training techniques or material. Sadly, its difficult for Canadians to sample the many schools as a lot of them won't train foreigners including Canadians. Lets not forget cost which is usually the killer for many.

I've trained with both SigArms Academy and Tactical Response. Both were excellent but both were very different in their methods. The Academy is a technical school. If you're looking to improve your performance and everything related, the Academy is excellent. Tactical Response is a mindset school. Your skills will improve but they don't focus a lot of time on the mechanics of operating a pistol(or rifle). That being said, there was a guy in the course that was about a virgin to shooting as one can be and he was performing very well by the end of day two.

Just because a school teaches a specific technique doesn't mean it is the most effective for your skill set or application. Learn all you can, put the tools in the tool box and use the right tool for the job.

On a side note I personally will not train with front Site or Valhalla based on some of their policies and their exaggerated training timelines.

I have had very occasional proper training in little snippits. The best set up was the FBI course at Quantico.

I tend to cant the pistol (I was told) and when i disputed this they rigged me with equipment that allowed the instructor to see the targets and sights through my eyes and then play it back, in slow motion, on TV. I stopped arguing and started to work on my cant problem.

Without some coaching, we practice our bad habits and get good at shooting poorly.

I am tempted to go to Front Sight in Vegas. Would do it here, if offered.

Greg,

You've peaked my interest. Is tactical response someone that you're bringing in to put on a training session or is it a club like IDPA? More info please?

Pistol Training

Tactical Response is a company that provides various firearms training. They will be coming to our range in the spring. You can search them on the net to see their training practices, schedule, and pricing.

John, can you pm me on another issue.

Thanks,

Greg

I am fortunate enough to have trained with the IPSC pro Gil Fangman out of Abbotsford. I don't do it as often as I would like though and one of my big resolutions this year is to do at least 1 session a month with Mr. Fangman, and to get some other training in when possible as well.

But I have to say I have learned more from Gil than from anyone else.

Well, another good training session with Gil Fangman here...I feel that I improved both my draw and my reholster, and my run-ups and target acquisition as well.

I also realized that I don't really even like going to the range UNLESS I am training. I really prefer being given a set of tasks to complete over just going and hanging out with my guns and blasting stuff.

For the lower mainland I would go with Slavex. He has the patience of Jobe and knows his stuff. You want a teacher. He is as good as any, and better than some.

These are all closer to you than you realize

...I don't suppose any one knows of any pistol shooting courses anywhere in NB? Heck, I'm so close, even Quebec would be all right as long as they can speak to me in english...
