I have been out of the loop for many yrs when i comes to handguns but retirement is coming up and I am getting back into it at my local club....I am sure there are lots of posts on the subject...When i am at the club after proper transportation..case locked...etc....is i legal for me to carry around the range in a holster? are there any limitations to this?...Id rather not leave it laying there while changing targets etc....but if need be so be it...any hoo any input is appreciated

As Cavs42 said, it depends on your specific range. Some will not allow holstered/ unloaded firearms at all. Most will allow it; some will require some form of certification either a Black Badge or given by the range itself.
Our range encourages the use of holsters for unloaded firearms. Guns are to be loaded only prior to use on the range.

Our range disallows shooting from holsters on the main rifle range - unless it is a sanctioned event where all ranges are being used.

I took umbrage with this as members are frequently the sole users during the week. That means the only way to secure your handgun is to:

- wear it when going downrange

- put it in your vehicle locked and boxed

I've had the experience of coming back from being down range to find someone I didn't know eye balling the handgun I left on the bench. He could just as easily taken it and hit the road. The first time this happens, the shooter who lost his gun is liable and contributing to any crime committed with his gun. And does the club have a liability as well if he was following policy?

On the other ranges, it is not an issue so long as you are a member of a discipline that shoots from the leather.

Why not wear your handgun while going down range or does your club not want that either?

Here in Terrace during the week I mostly live in the back pistol pits during the summer. During the winter - a euphemism for what the rest of the country calls a cold fall - I am on our 100 yard pistol//22/PCC range. When on the pistol range and alone I wear my gun down range to change targets. I don't make it a practice of going out to 100 yards without being armed. I am now up to three occasions when I arrived at the back of the range along with a Black Bear so out of an abundance of caution I have my pistol loaded.

I have never been all that concerned about theft at our range while busy setting up targets etc. I suppose if I lived in a higher density urban area my concerns might be different.

Our club tries to limit range rules to safety issues. I spent six years on our Board and the issues you elude to were never discussed or brought to our attention as a concern from other members.

Yeah, even at my range that doesn't allow drawing on the front range allows you to holster an empty weapon. No fuss, try drawing from holster in the front range and well you'll be asked to leave. Same with loaded firearms when not on firing line/point. And this is in USA of all places too.

That was my point - better to wear it downrange than leave it on the bench unattended. I still haven't got a satisfactory answer, but I will .....

They don't allow carrying guns in holsters at my club either unless holster certified ie club course or BB and only at the designated range.
