Hello,

I have a much loved Springfield 1911 government model that rattles so much it could be mistaken for a childs toy(I am not kidding). Is there anyone who can tighten this pistol up and then make sure that the rest of the gun will work with it? Cost? This is a blued steel, 5 inch model. I imagine a rebluing would be required.

squeezing

There are two tricks I read years ago in a pistol smithing book. I've used them on one of my guns; no reason to complain.

Put some nonmarking jaws on your vise. GENTLY squeeze the bottom part of the slide - the hooks that grip the frame. You are trying to turn the rails inwards ever so slightly. The other trick is to put the frame in the vise (take off the grips and anything protruding). Then with a small hammer beat down the hooks on the frame that grip the slide. Neither operation needs much force, but enough to bend metal to there is more engagement surface.

If you get really ambitious, you can resquare the surfaces with valve grinding grit. Be very careful to clean it all off, or it will be a gift that keeps on giving.
