Piston lever popping up

First off...I'm not a SKS expert.

Secondly, apologies in advance...I'm probably not naming the parts properly but I'll do my best to describe what's happening.

My SKS was working fine previously. I swapped over to a Tapco stock, without any issues. The fit around the gas-tube/piston carrier seemed ok. The infamous pin that holds the rear cap of the piston carrier was a biatch to get out...I had to drill mine out and don't have a pin back in place there now (maybe that's the issue?)

When I was firing at the range yesterday the lever on the right side of the block that holds the plunger and spring and captures the rear end of the piston housing kept popping up (i.e. unlatching). It was awkward/stiff to position it back down...but after some encouragement (tapping it down with a screwdriver) it went back into position. Then after a couple of shots it'd pop back up.

When I got home from the range I took it all apart and the parts seem to be ok (i.e. not damaged/bent/etc...). Cleaned it all up and reassembled.

I bent the tip of the lever a bit more so it'd hook into the little indent in the block when it's in the down/closed position...not encouraged that that's going to fix it though.

For those who are really familiar with the SKS comment on what is happening that would cause the lever to pop up under operation? Any fixes, recommendations or specific points/areas to look at?

Thank you,

Tys

Mine is REALLY tight. I have to use pliers to move it. I guess bending it to make it tighter should fix it. It is not connected to any other mechanical part, so it can only pop up because of the vibrations when firing.

Get that pin replaced! As that part is now moving under recoil since it is not attached to the piston cylinder, that is what is causing your problem. They are not supposed to move like that.

If it wasn't shooting loose before the stock and hand guard change then your issue is probably fit between the two new parts. I'm assuming your filed the angle on the new tube correctly.

If all else fails you can take a 1/4" steel ball bearing place it on the peened side of the gas tube locking lever, place the other side of the lever agents a hardwood block and give it a few taps with a ball peen hammer to tighten up the lever.

The lever is really tight/stiff to move (i.e. I use a pair of needle nose pliers to move it)...but it's getting knocked up when firing. I'll fit a pin to it and retest.

The top handguard fit of the Tapco stock is kind of lousy (seems a bit short) so that may be the cause.
