Hello experts,

I recently got an SKS, and upon dissemble it, i found a hole under the gas tube. Is it from corrosion? Still ok to shoot? Thanks in advance.

Probably won't cycle. Get it welded shut. I can also see more damage below where you drew that square. I f you need a new gas tube, they are hard to come by and expensive. If you bought this from a dealer, return it.

That looks cut out.... Or crushed... There is not supposed to be a flat spot lol.
I NDA looks like someone had it in the vice a bit to tight trying to dismantle it.
I would replace that gas tube... Tapco makes a complete unit... You can swap it to the wood grip

Pretty sure every Russian SKS I have handled had that same hole. They always work. I don't think there is a reason for it. Just part of the manufacturing or refurb process is my guess. I would not worry about it just make sure it does not rust like any other SKS

Will work without any problems. It is after the 2 gas release holes on the tube.

That is what I was suspecting as well - there are vent holes on the gas tube normally and they are located infront of the hole in the OP (and you can see them in the picture). Thus, there shouldn't be any issues as far as cycling goes.

Thank you all for the advice! it's still quite interesting based on Gnome75's experience, not sure why Russian did this in refurb.

I own more SKS than Gnome75 handled and none has this hole.

But Suther and FSB are correct, the gas piston cylinder is not reaching that area if that's the only damage and the gas piston is moving freely. How does the other side look where the trunion is? That area is often the most corroded.

.

Clearly I am going to have post some pictures (if i can remember to) after work. I no longer own 5 however I actually though that hole was normal before today

I agree, it will work just fine.

I had two just like that, from a crate I bought at $59 each, delivered. All were Russian FTRs and obviously they had someone on the bench that was overly aggressive with a grinder.

If you don't like the look of it, take it to someone with a TIG welder and get it patched up.

Lever Arms sells just about any part you might need for an SKS, at reasonable prices.

This is perfectly normal. Some have it, some dont. Its a milled relief for the front ferrule band on the barrel. It has ZERO impact on the function of the SKS.

Just wire brush it really well and hit it with JB and Rustcheck. Shoult be OK. I've only had 2 -' 51 Tulas - and I didn't have that prob.

Confirmed that my Russian has a hole. Functions perfectly even though it's worse than the OP's. My buddie's Russian does not nor does my Chinese

Rifle is fine

I notice that the OP's gas tube is force matched (so not original to the rifle.) Is yours also force matched?

Mine is force matched but doesn't have the hole.
