So I just got my first sks and have about 500 rounds through it. I decided I needed a Tapco stock to tacticool it out. So Just finished installing it and it was not a easy as I thought it would be. It required a lot of use of my knockometer (hammer). Anyway back to the point when I removed the hand guard on the gas tube I noticed the outer top of the gas tube looked really pitted (like the moon surface) the inside of the gas tube is nice and smooth. The rifle fires fine and no problems yet, but was just wondering if this is normal or will I be looking for a new gas tube soon?

Corrosive ammo my friend. It will be normally if you have not cleaned your gas tube after shooting this stuff.

Clean your entire gun, do a full strip, with the old windex, then normal gun solvents. Grab a steel or a brass wire brush for the bore size that would correspond to the SKS gas tube. Drown in gun oil. Brush like the dickens while drowning in more oil, repeat. Should be good at that point.

It is not the inner of the gas tube, I have cleaned it everytime I have been out. It is the outer part of the gas tube under the wooden hand guard. It appears to have been re-blued over, maybe part of the refurb process

Dont worry if there no hole your good. There is no high pressures in that part.

Good news, I guess the saying is true "ignorants is bliss". All back togther now just have to take it out and give it a try with the new stock.

NOOO SAY IT AINT SO!!!!! Another victim of corrosive ammo!!!! I forgot to clean my sks for a month after firing 100rnds at the range. A month later i go to get it out of my safe and THE HORROR just a stock and bayonet laying there!!!!!!!!!!

I've found the gas cylinder to be the most rust prone part of my sks rifles. I always clean it immediately after I get home from the range.

I skirt Windex down it first, patch and wipe it dry, then clean it with Hoppes. Clean the gas tap with a q-tip and Hoppes, put a drop of oil in the ring around the part of the gas tap that fits in the gas cylinder.

Ya, ya, I know, no boiling water, but it has worked flawlessly for me!

Guys, his rust is on the OUTSIDE of the gas tube, between the outside of the tube and the handguard. It is likely due to getting wet in storage.

This is not a corrosive ammo issue and the Ruskies blued over it at refurb.

Nothing to see here, move along....
