...is it a matching rifle? One of the attractions of Mausers of course is all of the matching numbers...

If it's an RC then it doesn't matter as much.

...better have a really careful look at those bores/chambers on the spare bbls. Have to wonder why they were taken off.

You also want to make sure they're the same exactly as a K98K barrel.

Well - you've got nothing to lose by polishing the chamber. You've got a pretty good chance that this inexpensive fix will solve your problem...

Might be worth it to see a good gunsmith and see what he would charge to polish the chamber. It would be a LOT cheaper than buying a new rifle.

That said, I have polished some pretty bad chambers and while it did enlarge the chamber slightly, it made a rifle usable.

If you just want a shooter, have a gunsmith polish the chamber. If the roughness is removed, the brass should extract ok if pressures are not too high. The rifle will still look 100% correct.

Or, if the pitting is real bad, have him set the barrel back 1 thread and run a reamer in. This should give you a fresh clean chamber and it would take a very sharp eye to see that it had been done.

It's an RC. Very nice barrels with excellent bores can be picked up at gunshows for less than a hundred dollars, complete with front and rear sights.

If you're hand loading for the rifle then it's just a quick swap out, $50. Headspace will likely be close enough not to worry about. You will be able to have your barrel set back but I'm willing to bet it's pitted as well. If it were mine and I wanted it to be more accurate than six inch groups at 50 yards, swap the barrel out and fireform the few thou difference it may be over max in headspace. Chances are more in favor if it being within spec than out. It's also the cheapest route if money is an issue.
