Hey guys i'm looking for some insight to help me with my build up if its possible.
First i have a Savage model 16fcss in a 7mm wsm with a Leupold VX3 for glass.
Now i want to build it to an all around kind of gun i wanna use it for hunting as well as a bench/target rig. And i dont care about lugging a heavy rifle. First i wanna lose the peice of crap stock it comes with but i've had one hell of a time trying to find a stock that will fit. I love the Choate sniper stock but cannot use it because i have a detachable box, unless i can cut out the bottom? I also like the McMillan A-5 but am unsure if it will fit. Aswell if anybody can recommend help with getting a heavy barrel done up would be awesome and greatly appreciated.

Hey, Dan. I have the exact same rifle as you do, except for the scope. I ordered a laminated stock from Richards Microfit, and then did some extensive work to the inletting to get the detachable mag system to fit. This included milling out the front stock screw hole and epoxying in some homemade pillars to get the proper screw spacing. I also glass bedded the entire action and free-floated the barrel. This was for a hunting stock with the factory barrel, but it would work with any aftermarket barrel or short-action stock.

I then ordered some new bolt heads and a barrel nut wrench from Sharp Shooters Supply, and a nice bull barrel in .223 from Shilen through our own Mysticplayer. I just received the barrel, and it fits perfectly. I just have to shoot it now with the .223 barrel to get an idea of accuracy, but I'm anticipating that it'll be much better than I'm used to. I'm also in the process of making a decent target stock out of the crappy factory stock, and I'm happy to say that it's coming along nicely. I've epoxied a piece of steel channel into the forend and then filled the forend with steel epoxy, and now it's as rigid as an army drill instructor. I've also designed and built an adjustable cheekpiece, and now the stock just needs to be painted so everything looks good.

All in all, It's taken very little time and effort to get everything done the way I like it, with minimal tools and experience. I would think you could modify any stock in a similar manner, and do all the mods yourself. I'm also in Alberta (Edmonton area).

Mysticplayer can fix you up with a barrel.. McMillan do inlet their A5 stocks to accept Savage actions... www.Mcfamily.com ....it is very difficult to build a bench/target rifle and a hunting rig all into one rig and get the best of both worlds... they are two very different types of rifles..
 
thanks for the imput fellas, another option i've been considering is paying a family friend to help me build a tac style rifle out of a nice chunk of wood. I'm gonna check into that heavy barrel as well. I've been thinking of selling the savage and steping into a rem700 just for the ease of parts etc. Do you guy's think it would be benificial to do so as well will the 700 shoot as accurate as the savage out of the box? also if you guys give give me an idea on what i could get for the savage.(great condition less than 50shots down the barrell ,7mm wsm)
