Planning a boar hunting trip in Texas

Had dinner with my in laws last night, and my wife's uncle was visiting from just outside of Houston. Told me he's been really getting into boar hunting, showed me his rig. He's using an AR-15 in 300BLK with night vision and a suppressor (30 round mag also, drool). He said we should come down and visit, and he'd take me out one night. We've been meaning to visit anyways, just wondering if anyone has any experience with hunting down there. I'd likely bring my Savage 99 in .308, unless I decide to rebarrel my AR to 7.62x39 or something... it's currently got a 14.5" .223 barrel on it, so that'd be a no go... it's not Chinese, so that part shouldn't give me any trouble... likely planning for spring next year. What kind of permits et al would I be looking at? He's got a bit of acreage in the country....
 
You'll need to complete an ATF Form 6NIA. Google it. No cost associated with it, but get it in ASAP. Don't bother bringing ammo - buy it down there.

Also will need appropriate hunting licences in Texas. You WILL be required to show proof of hunters training - not online when you buy, but likely in the field. I just bring my AB hunting license and WIN card - since I don't have the certificate from hunters ed decades ago. :)
 
Like said above get your form 6 in ASAP. It's good for a year once they approve it. You can get a 5 day non- resident licence good for unlimited hogs. Cost was $48 three years ago when i last went.

Proof of hunter's ed is only needed if you were born after 1971.
 
Little update, wife couldn't get the time we originally wanted off work, so we bumped it to the second week of October (did not want to be there mid summer, I hear it can get rill hot...). Booked our flights this morning. Her uncle's got an extra rifle for me, so I don't have to worry about that portion. Just need to get my license (although from what I have read of the laws, if it is pest control on on private property, a license is not needed?) Anyways, from I what I have read, a non-resident, 5 day special license is easy to get whilst there. Getting excited.
