What do you guys use to hold all of your home rolled ammunition? I've been able to get by re-using left over boxes from factory ammo (.223 and 9mm), but I think it's time to move on. Wholesale Sports has a bunch of MTM boxes, but they lack a real hinge and just rely on bending plastic. Does anybody make ammo cases with a real type hinge or should I just look for the cheapest cases I can find and use them until the bending plastic "hinges" break? Where's a good place to buy a bunch of them from?

I think I have 40some, 50 round MTM boxes. Never had a hinge problem or had one of their boxes break or fail in any way.
I also have some 100 round boxes MTM boxes that I just hate. These are to one with the carry handle. They tend to open themselves when you walk in tall grass, but only if you have your ammo sorted for testing.

Dillon makes them too, dirt cheap. A little less durable feeling than mtm, but insignificantly priced (1-2bucks US).

Well I guess I under-estimated the power of the plastic hinge! Thanks guys.

I'll check WalMart first though since there's one in my home town.

Mine won't open without help, but with small ammo (223 etc) you have to be careful not to tip it while carrying it with an armload of junk, or those carefully sorted cartridges for testing jump out of the holes.

I'll cut a piece of foam to put inside the lid to try and stop that, someday...

Where can I find the MTM boxes

The Le Baron in Montreal is always chronically "out of stock" A few weeks back they had no ammo boxes, no .38/.357 brushes or jags, no bullets.

Their catalogue is way too big for what they really stock in store, I can't wait for Cabelas to open in 2008.

Meanwhile, where is the best online supply of the 100 MTM blue boxes?

The MTM Case-Gard ammo boxes are rated for 1 million open/close cycles. I've yet to wear one out. Wal-Mart also carries the Plano boxes. I like them a lot as well. Heavy gauge plastic, actual hinges and the top can be flipped back, out of the way making it easier to retrieve cartridges. I've got some Dillon, but I found the plastic to be brittle. Drop one and it'll crack.

I've seen MTM ammo boxes that have failed, but I think what happened is that they were left out in the sun in the bottom of a boat or something and deteriorated. My own boxes have never failed, and even forcing them open in the cold doesn't seem to break them. I prefer the heavy dark green boxes to the others.

Those are the Plano boxes, supper rigs!
I hate the MTM's although I have lots of them.
I have broken tops of them, and they are a pain when trying to load them up in the last row.

I get the plano ones for rifles. For pistols, I use either the 1.5 kg peanut butter containers, or ice cream pails, depending on how many I have. I was storing pistol rounds in old factory boxes, but it just took up too much space. I keep a few factory boxes to fill for trip to the range, or just dump a couple handfuls into a small peanut butter container.
