Please define "1/4 sawn"

Hey
Could someone please give me a definition of "1/4 sawn" in regards to rifle blanks.

1/4 Sawn refers to the method of cutting the stock blanks from a log. Instead of the usual sawing method, the log is cut into quarters and then milled. This less efficient method results in a more stable and attractive blank.

1/4 sawn wood is simply wood that is sawn across the grain. Instead of being cut along the side of the log, the cut is made toward the centre. Its difficult to get and expensive because commercial sawmills don't generally 1/4 saw, only custom mills do.
