Hey guys
A friend of mine has a Remington 7mm weatherby mag and is wondering if it can be converted to a 338 lapua, its a long action Remington 700 action. He knows it'll need a new barrel and hes going to put it in a new stock. He's just trying to figure out if the action will stand up to 338 lapua and if he will need to change the bolt head? Anyone ever done this type of conversion?

Got the answer thanks guys

The bolt face on the 7mm Weatherby Magnum is 0.532", while the 338 Lapua is 0.588". So, the bolt does not work. The Lapua cartridge is also about 0.2" longer, so action length may be an issue. Whether or not the action can take it, is harder to answer. You would have to do some research to see if Remington ever chambered the 338 Lapua in that action. Since the bolt face diameter is increased the axial thrust will be increased.

All cost considered, he may want to just consider a new gun.

The action will take it, the bolt face would need to be opened up, and more than likely a different extractor installed, there is no "bolt head" on a Remington bolt so another option would be to get a ptg bolt and have the action fitted to said bolt. At the end of the day by the time your done converting the action you have it's probably a bit more cost effective to just buy a custom action or a factory 338 lapua.

I've done this and just installed a PTG bolt. I'm using HS Bottom metal and the rifle functions flawlessly. Built it as a dedicated elk rifle. Remington has made many .338 Lapuas and yes the action will handle the round with ease.

Currently shooting 265 Barnes LRX at 2950 FPS and will hold 1/2 MOA out to 700 yards.

Build it if you want.... ain't no issues if built right.

My experience has been the 700 action does not handle the big Lapua round with ease... it handles it but many have experienced hard bolt lift with the same loads that more substantial actions designed for the big round handle with ease. The Lapua round needs more barrel around the case which reduces excessive case expansion.

Well guess mine must be an anomaly!!! Seems to work fine with no hard bolt lift and I'm running the 265LRX over 2900 + fps. Guess it's all in who builds the rifle. Never had any issues with bolt lift even when finding max loads while doing load development!

As far as more barrel around the case..... Not too sure whats meant by that....1 1/4" is 1 1/4" don't matter what action the barrel is screwed too. If you want bigger go bigger......

Op guess your on your own here.......do what you need to but don't shy away from the rem 700 they are great actions!

It isn't about the barrel diameter ahead of the action... it's the diameter of the action threads ... larger diameters give more support to the chamber... Actions designed for the larger modern cases have threads considerably larger than 700's... the biggest reason the Lapua case works at all on smaller actions is due to the high quality and design of the 338 Lapua brass.
