I have read through the whole "My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!" Thread. IMO That is not a true reality of what your guns shoots. I think you should have to put up a 25 group page or two pages for 50 groups. With My savage MKll BV I have gotten lucky and shot a 5 group 1/2" group challenge. But in reality the gun on average generally shoots 5/8 to 3/4 groups. With Eley Sport. When searching the internet it seems about what the gun should do. I shoot 25 group pages and have averaged it out over 200 groups. All shot on the same afternoon. There was the one row where i got lucky and it averaged under 1/2" So 2.5% or 1 of 40 of the 5 group tries was under 1/2". But that does not mean its an 1/2" shooting group gun.

So how about a real challenge?

I think I get the meaning of what you're saying, that people might simply be showing their BEST groups...and not all the crappier groups that were shot leading up to it? :) Since getting my Anschutz 64 MP R...and feeding it some caviar-grade ammo..I'm confident I'd do pretty well on a challenge like this. However, were I tasked with having to account for every shot that hit the paper from the start, the first few cold-bore shots would definitely throw my score a little. Do I consider it a 1/2" @ 50 yard gun? Guess I never really asked myself that question, but I think I'd be inclined to answer "yes". However, over the course of a long afternoon of shooting (like you described doing yourself)...I know there are wind changes, fatigue starts to play a role in how I'm shooting, etc. I see groups improve up to a point...then plateau...then start to open-up and look like the first groups I shot.

If you shoot at downloadable targets, post a link...maybe I'll take a crack at this once old man winter loosens his grip on this part of Ontario. :p

I am using a 10 round clip which helps a lot. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to do something like this. Taking breaks and trips to change sheets and to get a better look at groups. I don't do any scope adjustments. I just let them hit where they hit as long as they are tight and consistent. You can watch your groups change and move a little bit as you shoot. I don't have the sheets anymore from the last time I did it last month when it was warm here. I know my worst group was 1 3/8" though. Over 40 groups having a bad group or two does not really affect the over all size. Unless you shoot something like a 6" group.

I have gone over my targets many times. If you take out the 5 best and 5 worst for 30 groups total it still ends up being between 5/8 and 3/4 groups for my gun. The very best and very worst just cancel each other out.

I also want to add. As soon as I arrive at my shooting spot, I pull out my gun and ammo to let it climatize to the temperature. Before I set anything up or put up any targets. It was +5 outside when I last went shooting. Versus the +22 in my truck the 1.5 hour drive out and in storage in my condo.

All I hear

Go give it a shot.

Trust me I had one hell of a road doing it.

If you can put 5 groups of 5 shots together. Not only is the gun a 1/2" gun but you are a 1/2" shooter. Reading wind, know how hot to let the barrel get ect ect...

Even with a gun that will put hole on hole, its still difficult... There is a reason no bench shooters get 1000

There is a 597 with a custom barrel on it on the list. Note the guy shooting it is on there a few times also.

note the people doing it are NOT getting one group at 1/2" they are getting 5 groups with 5 shots at 1/2"...

If you can get "lucky" with 25 shots in a row and place 5 groups of 5 shots all under 1/2" you need to gamble more.

Rules
"Ok. Here it is. The challenge is to shoot 5 five shot groups with a 22lr at 50 yards/meters under 1/2"

Here are the requirements for the challenge:

You must use a 22 lr

There is no restriction on action type or cost of the firearm

You may use any 22lr ammo you wish

You must shoot five 5 shot groups at 50 yards/meters

All 5 groups must be under 1/2"

All 5 groups must be on the same paper

There cannot be any other groups on your "official" target

There cannot be anything on your target that could be hiding any group or bullet hole that is not part of your "official" attempt

All the attempts at the challenge must have been shot after the challenge was issued

Your post must include the following:

A pic of your rifle and the rest you used

A pic of your target with all 5 groups visible and the group sizes and group average written on the target

A pic of your largest group with a set of calipers to verify the group size

Your rifle info

Your post must also have THE GROUP SIZES AND AVERAGE WRITTEN IN THE POST

Please put all your info into ONE POST. If you forgot anything please EDIT your post to include the missing info

ALL POSTS MUST HAVE THE REQUIRED INFO OR I WILL IGNORE THEM UNTIL ALL THE INFO IS INCLUDED IN THE POST!!!!!"

^^^^ sounds like you are in the "got lucky" group and don't have a gun that can do it over and over when called out. I am also in the "got lucky" group. You just copy and pasted the little kids challenge which anyone can get lucky and do.

Canadiankeeper I have read your posts in the past about trying to do this. Do it over and over and give your gun some credibility. Other wise you belong in the "got lucky group with myself.

I could post up a five group challenge where I got lucky and did something under 1/2" but that isn't a true representation of what the gun routinely shoots.

I have to say I'm not quite sure of the point being made. I admit to not being the sharpest knife in the drawer. Perhaps you were indeed lucky to qualify with your Savage. After all there are fellows who have posted qualifying entries shot with 7X or 9X scopes. There may even have been one shot with a scope of even lesser magnification. Now that might be luck if not something else.

Not every challenge-worthy rifle can consistently shoot 25 groups of five shots under half-an-inch -- at least for most mortals. And there's the crux of the problem. The hardest part for many shooters can be maintaining the necessary mental discipline to shoot consistently for the hours on end required for 25 or 50 groups of five shots under half-an-inch.

Show for the world to see two or three target sheets shot the same day with the same rifle that have ten or fifteen groups of five shots each that measure under half-an-inch. That should be enough of a "real challenge".

alberta guy;
I am going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are not being intentionally insulting to those members who have successfully completed the challenge. However, to assert that completing the challenge is merely a matter of luck is absurd. Lets take our esteemed member grauhanen for example ; by my count he has completed the challenge successfully 25 times. Did he just get lucky 25 times? Do you really think he shot a total of 625 lucky rounds that all met the 1/2" group size criteria - I think it is safe to say that there was some skill involved in this accomplishment and that the rifles and ammo used were also up to the task.

This is going to be my last post on this topic. I can see i am hurting peoples feeling on this. Yes you people have skills and have shot five, five round groups the averages under a 1/2". To pass the challenge. I have done it too with my savage. But I just want you to prove you can do it all day long with your chosen gun an ammo. Not once a summer when you get lucky like i did and many else have. Like I said I got lucky for those five groups but I have no been able to do it since. I have been real real close but not succsesfull. That is why I do not put my pictures on the internet. Best group 25 shot 5 group challenge. Yah, under 1/2" for sure. Everyday shooting... most likely not going to happen for me again any time soon.

A few things to say... First off is that anyone who's run .22 LR ammo over a chronograph knows that you'll run into a few hot and weak rounds over the course of shooting 25-50 groups of 5 shots, ruining your attempt through no fault of the shooter, or rifle. .22 ammo just isn't that consistent, and anyone who could shoot such a target would truly be in the "got lucky" group.

I kinda agree with your sentiment that this isn't much of a challenge, when you have an accurate rifle it's not much of a strain on the ol' shootin' skills. In your case, "getting lucky" and achieving success with a borderline capable rifle is even more of an accomplishment than doing so with a custom benchrest rig, your rifle gives you no room for error, every shot had to be spot on. You can mess up some shots with a very accurate rifle and still succeed this challenge, it gives you that buffer room to keep the group under 1/2". To keep it interesting for myself, I've modified the criteria to meet before I will post a target. I don't accept any groups in the 0.4's anymore (if the rifle is capable of better, sometimes you just have to be satisfied with 0.3's and 0.4's), one rifle I want to be all under 1/4" before posting (I have many success under 1/2" already, but no post), and another one I have success with a scope, in spring I'll be going for it with iron sights.

I can back up every rifle I've posted to the thread with multiple successful 5x5 shot groups, and in some cases 10 qualifying groups on one page. Hey CK, don't kid yourself that 597 target was no fluke, that gun can shoot with the Lilja on it ;) I kinda think the point of that thread is to celebrate successes, even if someone struggled and can't consistently do it. Those that can do it with ease, usually have nothing else to prove to someone on the internet.

So if you were only able to do it once, then it is in fact quite challenging for You, correct? Plus there is no proof you have ever done it.

I think you've probably tried so many times, unsuccessfully, that you are now bitter.
