ive used the S&J, Wilson Combat/Scattergun Tech and Choate extensions without a mag clamp with no issues. if you look at how the S&J and WC ones are built, the 'clamp is necessary for durability' idea is pretty absurd
but apparently according to this thread on the factory Remington extensions its necessary to keep the thing together
The issue is the remington tube is 2 parts and will spin of when shooting if no clamp is used.
The willson units is made the same way but is weled togeather.
Our unit is cnc machined from solid steel and one pc.
There are some 870 out there that do not have much thread on the tube past the barrel lug.
It has been said that if you were to smash your tube off somthing hard then the extenstion would come off.
I have not seen this happen, but even the smallest dent i nthat tube and the ammo will not feed.
This is the reason a 1pc solid steel tube is what we like.
But a mag clamp will stop the tube from coming off for sure.
