Hey Everyone,

I am fairly new to target shooting and have been looking to pick up a new rifle. I had pretty much made up my mind on getting the Remington 700 SPS Varmint (in .223) and then just adding onto it as I get more money/experience shooting. However, I have come across a Remington 700 VTR (Varmint Target Rifle) on sale at Wholesale Sports for only $110 more than the 700 SPS. I am just wondering if I will be better off buying the 700 SPS and putting the extra $110 towards a new stock/barrel/whatever later on or is the 700 VTR going to be better out of the box?

p.s. I am looking to use this for target shooting and the odd coyote hunt.

Thanks for any input you guys have,

Cheers,

I would personally go with the SPS Varmint. The Triangular barrel on the VTR doesn't seem to offer any advantage over the standard round barrel contour. Also many people say the muzzle break built into the VTR doesn't seem to do much.

There is a good review/comparison between these two rifles on snipercenteral. Check it out! They came to the conclusion the SPS-V was a better choice.

Thanks for the info. Brodie,

That makes my decision much easier. I did not think that the surface area of the barrel, and the resulting drop in heat dissipation, would decrease the accuracy. It is also good to know that I would still have replace the stock eventually.

Thanks again,
