I am wanting to branch out from F-Class to pursue Service Rifle again after a decades long hiatus. The nostalgic part of me wants to use an Enfield, but the practical side of me says AR.

I am wanting some advice from AR users as to which manufacturer you feel has the best off-the-shelf 5.56/223 rifle and maybe who has the best value as well. I tended to think I would just buy whatever Wolverine sells, since they tend to sell only high-end stuff. :) but I may be missing the big picture.I would also welcome recommendations as to an optical aiming system for Service Rifle.

My plan is not to jape the hell out of the rifle, I would tend to keep it fairly "stock".

Sweet, I knew you would cave. I am gonna do the Service rifle game next year also.

Get any of the major brands in a 20" bbl's flat top and you're good to go. The 14.5" or 16" bbl's AR's are more ###y. However, you loose enough velocity at the 500m/y to make a difference. All the military teams are using their standard C7 (20" bbl) and seem to be always on top of this game. Of course physical fitness is even more important than the rifle you compete with. A good quality low power scope, 4-6X or variable from 2.5-10X is also a real asset. Target turrets on the scope are a good thing, since you are aways adjusting elevation for the different ranges. If you can dial in the wind corrections as well, that's a plus. The Elcan always does well at the competitions, but an Leupold Mk4 MR/T 2.5-10X40 is the ultimate IMHO :D

I would think that Off the Shelf a RRA or Bushmaster DCM gun with a Flat top and an Elcan would be the way to go...great triggers, awsome barrels and they look factory...

Any off the shelf 16" will be good to go. If you desire, 20" is good too. You don't really need anything overly sophisticated.

If you can pick up a 3rd or 4th gen Elcan for 500-600 bucks, you are good to go. Another choice that is easily accessible and reasonably priced will be the Leupold 1-5.5 SPR if you are the type that needs to turn knobs for anything. You don't really need to have 1/4MOA adjustment- it comes with 62gr BDC.

Personally, I like Elcan or ACOG TA31F - that knob turning exercise, IMHO, is un-needed when the bullseye is like 2MOA?? However, most target shooters are more comfortable with the need to have "consistent" sight pictures. I am used to "fire and adjust", quick and dirty way to get jobs done.
