I have taken a few of these over the last couple of years, I think I know what it is, just so hard to tell sometimes with the hens...

Uhmmm.... Wouldn't you have to know what it is you're about to shoot BEFORE you pull the trigger?

Yes he would have to know it was a duck. On PEI if he had 4 black ducks dead then he would have to make sure the next duck he shot was not a black duck. Other than that he would only have to make sure it was a duck and not a curlew or osprey.

In Alberta I can shoot 8 of everything but pintails of which I can only shoot 4. So I really don't worry about the species in the early morning (other than avoiding mergs and shovelers). Whether I shoot a wigeon or gadwall doesn't matter much to me cause I can count to 8. When I get 4 pintails (only happened once) then I get to be more careful about the "grey ducks" I shoot.

Now I CAN identify all my ducks on the wing (even the eclipse birds) and 95% of the time do know what it is I'm pulling the trigger on. At low light though all I really care about is that I'm IDing the bird as a duck. That's easy.

I am slowly learning to ID the flyers...

We can now shoot 6 mallards here (used to be 4) so now Mallard and Blacks at low light can be a real challenge... so far has never been an iuuse, I have only one limited out on Mallards (last year, I got 2 pair) and only once limited out on Blacks (monday of this week)

As far as Pintails hens, Blue wing and even greenwings, they all look so similar in the evening, hell I have shot black ducks that magically became teal once retrieved they just seemed much further away.
