A friend inherited this old gun from his father and is trying to get some information on it. It is stamped 1816 with either a lion or a tiger holding a crown. It's a flink lock with what looks like ivory or mother of peal inlays. Any information or direction where to look would be greatly appreciated. He plans on selling this in the near future.

It is known as a jezail and the lock is salvaged from a East India Company musket (essentially a brown bess) The rampant lion was used after 1809 and the date on the lock is the date of manufacture of the lock but not the gun. The jezail could have been manufactured anytime after the original owner of the lock came to an untimely end but most likely in the 1800s

Needs work but it could be a beautiful decorator...... functional, too.

According to Kipling, price on this would be about ten rupees/ fifteen shillings.

Nice that it has a high-quality English lock; many had locks that Bubba would have made in his garage, except they were made before Bubba got a garage!

Sometimes you will find these with very extensive inlay work, but only rarely in good safe operational condition. Sems they all need work and this one is no exception.

Nice find!
