Hello everyone :)

This is Alex from Vancouver.

I am new to this hobby and I decided to purchase one of those two options:

https://www.cabelas.ca/product/39821/savage-mark-ii-fxp-bolt-action-rifle-w-scope
https://www.cabelas.ca/product/109354/savage-arms-b-series-bolt-action-rimfire-rifles

Please let me know what do you think :)

What else should I also get? I will be getting the rifle + scope, ammo, rifle bag and a cleaning kit. Anything else? Maybe eye and ear protection?

My purpose of starting this hobby will be for target practice, I do not intend to hunt animals.

Thanks!

Welcome Alex. Nice to see a new shooter starting off.
No maybe about it. Eye and ear protection is a must. You won't be able to shoot st a range without them.
I'd go with a 22lr if just shooting paper. Much less expensive than 22mag and the paper won't know the difference.
Good luck and good shooting!

Thanks for the input!

Actually both options can come in the 22lr option, I was just wondering about the build quality/ scope quality etc.

Like scotteboy points out, stick with the 22lr. Ammo will be cheaper when shooting standard velocity ammo and a better variety of match grade ammo.
Either one will be a good starter gun but as you will find out you will be looking at higher end guns once you go down that rabbit hole.
I'm sure there will be others at the range you will be shooting at that will be more than happy to show you there guns and give you the lowdown on this great sport.

I only have exp with the Savage MKIi. I enjoy mine, for what it is. I got the FV SR though.

For ear protection foam ones are the best for rifle and 22LR. Then again I dislike shooting rifles with ear defenders, I only use them for pistols.

Welcome to the club!
Either one will do as a starter rifle and will perform on the range.
22 is the way to go if you are starting off.
The lower cost ammo allows you to shoot lots while not emptying your wallet.
Eye and ear pro are a must.
Have fun.

I have owned savage 22 rimfire rifles they were fairly accurate and reliable. The scope will be cheap and may or may not be decent. However at that pricing you have an inexpensive scope and rings for free.

A numbered combo trigger lock
foam ear plugs
get a bolt action 22 and a 4-12 or higher zoom scope

I'd 100% go used. Save $200 and the tax.

Trigger Lock.
For transportation to and from the range or to comply with safe storage regs. if you don't have a lockable safe/cabinet to store it.
Being that it is an NR gun, he could also remove the bolt for storage. But a trigger lock is a great thing to have. Combo, not key. You WILL Forget or lose your key eventually.

I have two Mark IIs, one is the base model like you're looking at (although not a scope combo, I bought just the bare rifle and spent some time shooting with iron sights before I bought a scope), the other is a heavy barrel stainless in a laminate stock. I am very happy with both rifles, the heavy barrel one has the edge with accuracy but doesn't have iron sights.

If you were ONLY planning on using a scope then I would suggest you look into the Mark II FV (the V denotes a heavy barrel).

Definitely 22LR. I personally would get the heavy barrel as well. Lots of good other suggestions for accessories. You might want a front bag to rest on when shooting from a bench, or maybe a bipod.

I’ve had this exact gun and it was good… but if you can afford it I’d consider a CZ 457.

These can be easily shipped, so shop around online. Lots of good stores in Canada, and maybe you might find one used one here or #######.ca

Have fun!!

Thanks for the tip, where do you suggest I source a used rifle other than this website?
Gun store. Most of 'em have a used rack. If you're in Vancouver then Reliable Gun and Italian Sporting Goods should be high on your list to check out.

You can also check the sponsor websites at the top of the page, a lot of them have used sections on their webpage.

That said, Savage Mark IIs are pretty cheap to begin with. I don't think you're going to save $200 like Jahnj0584 suggested, but you should be able to save SOME money over buying new.

First off , not a hobby , more like an Obsession ! Go with the 22 lr the difference in cost is large . Go to a gun store if possible and try the fit of each . Also what will you be waring when shooting , if a jacket , put it on when trying the firearm . Just my 2 cents !

Guns are like Pringles. Can't ever just have one. Soon enough you'll be a dozen deep looking for more.
