Hello All,

I was wondering if someone here could do me a big favour and measure the length of their magazine on the Winchester Model 12 shotgun. A field gun, no mods to it if possible please. I've seen alot of old Model 12 "Trench Guns" and they have an "overbite" with a 20" barrel over the tube mag, so I am curious how far back you would have to shorten a field barrel to meet the barrel. Obviously you can only go back as far as 18.52 inches.

Well, since I just so happen to have one handy ('cause I cleaned mine today), the magazine tube measures 17-1/16" to the breech face.
 
My mossberg 500 is cut to 18" and when I went to re-register the short barrel length the old lady at the CFC gave me a hard time trying to tell me what I did was illegal.

Truth be known, I got my registration cert in the mail 3 weeks later marked as barrel length under 470mm and guess what NON-Restricted!

So 18" is legal.

Where have you guys been lately there are 100 threads concerning "Is it 18 or 18.5." The 18.5" crowd 75% of the time still thinks they are right.

18" is legal for a factory barrel but for castration it's 18 1/2".
 
No. 18" for manually operated and .22 firearms, 18 1/2" for semi auto centerfires.
If all else fails, go to the CFP website and check.

Be careful if approaching the limit.

Does the world need another bubba'd shotgun?

Correct, my bad, it is 18" but I recommend 18 1/2" on a chop.
 
It's in the Criminal Code.

"prohibited firearm"
"prohibited firearm" means
(a) a handgun that
(i) has a barrel equal to or less than 105 mm in length, or
(ii) is designed or adapted to discharge a 25 or 32 calibre cartridge,
but does not include any such handgun that is prescribed, where the handgun is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,
(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or
(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,
(c) an automatic firearm, whether or not it has been altered to discharge only one projectile with one pressure of the trigger, or
(d) any firearm that is prescribed to be a prohibited firearm;

(c) a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or
(d) a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm;

It's really very simple. Lots of bubba'd shotgun bbls out there measure 17.9 inches because someone didn't leave enough metal to dress the cut after he made it.

Cut to 18.5 inch and you have ample room for smoothing and squaring the muzzle after the rough cut. With enough left to be able to fix muzzle damage if it happens later.

Cut to 18" - you better cut perfectly straight, and hope you never need to dress that muzzle ever again.

Hmm. Interesting. 18.5 it is. Also, here's a question, what type of hacksaw blade would I need? Any other methods of cutting you can suggest? What to follow up with, what grade sandpaper etc.
 
"...type of hacksaw blade..." Using a hack saw guarantees not to have anywhere near a straight cut. If there is no rib, use a pipe cutter. With a rib, take it to a smithy. Ribs aren't always metal or attached over the whole length.
"...follow up with..." A medium file followed by a fine file. Polish with emery paper.
A Winchester Model 12 can be worth far too much money to be screwing around with the barrel.
