Guys I need some help. Feel free to laugh at me too, since I'm an optics newb.
I have an elcan specter dr and it has a crosshair reticle with some sort of range finding index on the lower left.
It looks like this:
300..400..500..600

30in / 76cm 4x

so what does this mean, does it mean that 30 inches should be the difference in height between the ___ and the --- at the specified ranges? why do they use 30 inches as a reference point?
is 30 inches the height of a man's head?
so if the mans head fits in between the gap that means its at that range and I should adjust accordingly?

P.S. I'm using a man's body as a reference since this is a military sight, by no means do I intend to shoot at a man's head

That is a Vertical Subtention Optical Rangefinder (VSOR). If you take a look at diagram 3.6.4 in your manual, it will explain it all out for you. In layman's terms, line up a man's torso (30 inches, from between the eyes to the belt buckle) between 2 of those lines. Whatever the reading is, is the distance. Don't have the manual? you can go to Armament's website and look at it there. Good luck.
