Last weekend I took my PAL and RPAL 2 day safety course. I am currently awaiting my results in the mail so that I can include it with my application.

Once I send my application I'll have to wait 2 - 3 months while they check my references. Eventually if I am not deemed to be a radical anarchist or drug dealer I will get my (R)PAL in the mail.

*I can now buy non-restricted firearms and any kind of ammunition

(R)PAL in hand I now call up my gun club of choice (in this case Burlington) And fill out their application.

I complete the clubs mandatory safety course.

* I can now apply for my first ATT through my club and can purchase my first handgun (processing time for purchase being 1 - 2 months)

Is that all correct? Did I miss anything? I'm in Ontario so from what I've been reading that will mean extra waiting for everything.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Congrats.
I dont have the answers for you because I am from BC and it works a little different here. But welcome to the club all the same!

What Paulinator said: As soon as you get your RPAL, buy a handgun. It's easier if you do it via mail order.

Also, as soon as you get your RPAL, take the club safety course. Most clubs will make you wait a little while in order for there to be a few people in the course at the same time. Once you've completed the course, the club will apply for your long-term ATT. Here's the catch:

- If you don't own a restricted, you can't have a LTATT. The CFO will reject it. (It can be reapplied for at a later date... probably with a two month delay.)
- If you purchase a restricted from a store, you won't typically get a STATT unless you're a member of a club.

Cart, horse, chicken, egg... I don't know. Ontario is weird... I should know... I'm here. For whatever reason, mail ordering seems to be the easiest way for the first one. Once you have your LTATT, things are much easier. (As easy as three months for a transfer are.)

Hope that helps...

Thanks for the tips Dynamite Monkey, any suggestions as to reliable mail order companys in Canada or will ship to here without too many hoops to jump thru? I'm waiting for my RPAL and want to cut as much time between wanting to shoot and shooting as possible. Thanx, Ric.

I, personally, love Wolverine Supplies. Banner at top of page, link here. I've dealt with Ryan on many occassions and have bought four firearms and many accessories/ammo from them. Customer service is excellent and the prices, while still higher than our American friends, are rock bottom for Canada. Plus any shipping is usually less than what PST would be here in Ontario.

The other thing you can do is make a purchase right now. The transfer won't be started until you have your RPAL, but you can buy or place a deposit on anything right now. If something needs to be ordered, your deposit will ensure it gets ordered now so there is less wait time later. If it's in stock, your name goes on it and it comes out of the inventory so nobody else gets it.

I'd also recommend you find a local dealer and develop a relationship with them. It never hurts to have local friends: Minor repairs, accessories, ammo, help repelling borders against the zombies etc.

You don't need your RPAL to join a club. I'd sign up for the membership ASAP so that it's all ready for when it's time to buy your gun.

That's actually a good point. Get the course done ASAP but if they send in the ATT application before you have a restricted in your name, it will be denied. Here's what I don't know: Once it has been denied, then you get a restricted in your name, does the club have to reapply or can you call the CFO and ask them to reprocess it?

Anyone... anyone?
