Truth be told, I haven't fired the 97 yet and have no idea if I will even like it. I am hoping to be able to meet someone in the Edmonton area with the FTU so I can at least get a feel for it. Something about it appeals to me. My stainless 582 series is wearing an ATI pro upgrade telescopic and folding stock in black. Big question....would you do it and why or why not?

Can, t honestly answer that but the guy I bought my mini 14 from said he was selling it as he was having more fun with his T97. I think it also has do do with if you like to shoot short range with open sights or with glass like I do.

I can see the fun being...comparable, as I always enjoy shooting my mini. Vortex strikefire at 75ish yards is my optic and range of choice.
I am keen on the AR mags and the left hand control with the FTU, along with a closed breech. Conversely, I freaking love a stainless rifle and have never had an issue with my mini in its 300 rds so far.

I've tried my friend's T97 a few times. I've never tried a Mini 14 but if it's like my M14, I'd stick with that.

I found the T97 to feel somewhat...cheap feeling I guess? I'm used to heavy rifles and the T97 was very light. I could feel the spring action every time I fired it like it was barely getting enough gas pressure to push the bolt back using American Eagle .223. I dunno, that's just what I experienced. Groups were nice though.

I have both. The mini 14 is certainly better built. The T97 has one of the poorest triggers I have ever pulled, horrible ergonomics, long lock time and a rear sight that is well, utterly bizarre (the apertures get bigger the farther the range??).
Once the novelty wares off, you will be wishing you had your mini back again IMHO.

I own a mini-14.

I've held a T97 with the FTU.

Both have their pros and cons. I prefer the mini-14 but I could be convinced to trade for the T97 with FTU. It's always fun trying out new rifles. I would not trade for the T97 in its original form.

You aren't describing the FTU.. ;)

Wait a second..where did all the mini 14 haters go?

If Norinco made the mini... it would be taking a beating.

I had a mini14 target. I tried the sparta stock for it. I did not like it at all.

I have shot a few T97. I found it surprisingly pointable, however unfortunately two of the three I shot had FTF issues.

I now have a T97 on the way, I am excited for it.

So, what do you want?

Mini 14 Pros:

reliable
can be accurate (target model)
classic
proven
Good safety and Mag release positions

Cons

Heavy - target model
proprietary mags limit capacity and add cost
proprietary scope mounts/rings adds expense.

T97 Pros

Bullpup compact package
AR-15 mags (LAR and Beowulf) BIG ADVANTAGE
FTU upgrade adds optics flexibility for red dot magnifier combo that mini lacks (Costs money)

Cons

Stupid mag release and safety (Under development by T97.ca)
reliability may need some tinkering.
stock platform lacks optic mounting options.
Barrel-sight relation is high.

Really other than caliber these guns do not have a lot in common.
I prefer the T97 mainly because it uses LAR and Beowulf mags.

And hopefully the T97.ca LHG is released soon to fix the safety and hopefully the mag release.
