I have an old savage 99 . It had a pistol grip stock on it that was damaged so i bought a new pistol grip stock from boyds.....it doesnt fit very well at all. Im wondering if it should have a straight grip on it?

if the lever is straight, straight grip.
If the lever is curved, pistol grip

You can change a straight lever to curved if you want to use pistol grip wood. The same holds true for a curved to straight lever if you want straight grip wood.

Boyds stocks need some fitting at times. Not all 1899/99's would fit the same even though they may have been pistol or straight grip.

I think this gun musta had a straight stock on it originally because the pistol grip fits like crap. Not very happy with it.
