just as a side note mine also has the leather bolt handle protector, and the 2 straps.

I got it at auction for a steal of a deal ;)

There was a guy riding a US Army Haley Davidson on Saltspring Island a few years ago with a Thompson smg scabbard still attached.
 
It is properly called Scabbard, Rifle, Model of 1938. And was made for use with the M1 rifle (M1903 rifle used the Model of 1918 scabbard) and for mounted (horse) use not for use on the "Jeep". Although it was used there extensively. There are three (3) version of this scabbard: 1) leather cover for the operating rod handle, 2) blacken brass and 3) steel. Many scabbards are found without straps because they were used on "Jeeps". Since the "Jeep" did not come into being until sometime in 1940 and the scabbard is a 1938 model you can see its intended use was for the horse cavalry.
