I got my Beretta Vertec 96FS just before Christmas from a dealer my dad knows. Gun was unfired and in box. I had it sitting in the safe until the weekend and cleaned it before I went out. I put about about 90 rounds through it at the range not noticing anything unusual. I was cleaning it again tonight and also fooling around with the Surefire E2D I bought a few weeks ago when I noticed something unsettling in the barrel. It wasn't all shiny and metallic looking like it should be. In fact, the rifling looked....rusty

I'm working on getting pictures uploaded as I don't have anywhere to host them right now.

Assuming worst case scenario and it's rust, can it be fixed or am I looking at a brand new barrel?

i don't think its rust, its probably just packing crud or crud from your ammo, as i'm pretty sure your factory Beretta barrel is chrome lined.... PM Slavex our resident beretta expert....

the winclean is good, no crud.. not sure about the hornady cartridges...

but i still don't think its rust on the inside.... and worse case if it is, you should be able to get it out /w some solvents....

if you want me to host the pics for ya ... ***EDIT, here is the pic

I ran a patch through it a few times with solvent and it didn't come out dirty at all. I'm going to get a proper sized brush this weekend (only have a 12 guage brush now) and try cleaning the barrel again.

any chance your barrel stripped some of the copper jacketing from the bullets off? My USP regularily strips the jackets and leave smears and bits and pieces of jackets all over the barrel.

The copper fouling is a real possibility. Please excuse my lack of knowledge in this area. This is my first handgun and first brand new gun. I sent my picture to hr for hosting (thanks again) so maybe that will help shed some light on the situation. If the general feeling is fouling, I'll stop by Wholesale and pick up some supplies to clean things out thoroughly.

Sounds like copper fouling to me too. I remember seeing it for the first time myself... I remembering thinking "Son of a b#$ch! I just cleaned it!"

calgary shooter, i think you need to focus on the barrel not the newspaper .. =P

its hard to tell what you have in there in the barrel, but that uniformity, does not look like rust, it just seems like that's the colour of the plating/whatever kinda chroming is used by Beretta... so clean it, and shoot it lots

Its not rust. I have it in both my USP's. In my newest USP it took less than 50 rounds to get like that. Maybe the new barrel is just too sharp on the inside?

hr, thanks again for putting that up. Yes I need to work on my digital skills. I was using it in auto mode and should have switched it to manual to focus on the barrel instead of the wonderful floor and the Calgary Herald. ;)

Is copper fouling fairly normal and is there anything that can be done to prevent that (ammo wise)? I'm going to pick up some copper solvent this weekend though and see what difference that makes.

Thanks guys for all your help. I swear I would be completely in the dark without CGN.

If you were using Winclean ammo, I tend to believe it was a result of the brass jackets on the ammo. Looks really odd  and you often get what looks like gold residue on the end of the barrel which is not normally seen on copper jacketed ammo, but not unusual for the brass stuff. It'll freak you out at first, but it is quite acceptable and just needs to be treated like copper jacket fouling..I'm sure you will be fine.
Cheers

Concur. That is what my barrels look like after using the WinClean BEB (Brass Enclosed Base) ammo.

If you rub the bullets enough,, the brass will flake off a bit,, looks like gold dust.

+1 When I shoot Montana Golds...

yup copper fouling, at one time (and maybe still) all Beretta handguns were test fired, 3 times I think. Then given a simple clean and lube. A few of mine had copper fouling residue in them, not a big deal at all. To this day I still don't care about copper fouling, only carbon fouling (when I even bother to care about that). I've shot 10's of thousands of rounds through my Beretta's with no copper cleaning, with no loss of accuracy or damage to the gun.
