Well let us see what is involved in a smithing shop before throwing them to the dogs, shop space , heat , insurance , tools and machinery [and there would be lots of $ racked up over the years].
so the way I see it is smiths spend some time on the phone talking to customers that they are not paid for more time at the counter when someone comes in etc.
Then they need to order tooling continuously , so the rest of the time is spent doing actual work on projects .
At the end of a 50 hour week for example I am certain most smiths are lucky to have 30-35 hrs that are billable to the customer.
So depending what part of the country you are in rates must vary from 50 to 85 bucks an hour.
sounds about right to me .
