I use the Otis pull thru cable type, you attatch a jag or brush on the end, it works well for removing the black carbon but doesn't do much about the copper and lead.
The rare time I clean it I run a rigid rod in from the muzzle end using a crown protector. I rest it action open in the work cradle so the ejection port faces down so the patches mostly fall free or can be easily picked out.
The crown protector is the key element to this. You don't want the rod of any sort rubbing on the edge of the crown. And if you understand about how abrasive dirt can become embedded in softer items like cords and nylon "string" you would still use a crown protector with a bore snake or Otis setup.
