I am considering buying a Rem.Choke barrel (3 chokes) for a 20 ga. model 870 that now has a full choke barrel.

Before doing so, I'd really like to hear from shooters who use Rem Chokes. I'm very interested in getting you opinion on the patterns they shoot.

Thanks very much,

Rob

Hi
I have to be honest and say I have not patterned any of my rem choked 20ga 870's other than with the skeet choke and that was fine. Not sure what you are going to use it for lead or steel?? targets or hunting??
Just make sure your 20ga is not a large frame receiver or the new barrel will not fit.

Have to add as you know rem chokes have been installed since 1987 so I am sure if there was pattern issues we would have heard about it. take care

that's a little bit like asking if your fingerprint is the same as mine. Different tubes/guns/loads will all shoot different. And see last comment in the post above

The shotgun is a new-to-me Wingmaster Magnum 3" manufactured in 1972 (near mint condition). I intend to hunt partridge with this gun using 2 3/4" shells, #7 1/2 of 8 loads and a IC choke.
Thx for your input.

1972 you better do some more checking prior to buying a barrel since it still could be a large frame and if it is no rem choked barrels are available to fit. It will be a trip to briley or a local shop for thin wall tube installation in the existing barrel.
Receiver codes on 20 ga. 870s are as listed below, the codes are the last letter in the serial number.

Full size frame, 2 3/4" = X ( began production in 1950)

Full size frame, 3" = N (began production in 1962)

Small frame LW 2 3/4" = K (began production in 1972)

Small frame LW/LT-20 3" = U (began production in 1972)

Thx, very much for your help. Serial number ends in "N". I'll check with Remington before ordering a barrel.
Rob

Unfortunately there is no barrel to order Rob she is a 20ga on a 12ga frame and no manufacturer made choke tubed barrels for those, including remington. You will have to get yours fitted for tubes by briley or a local gunsmith.
Glad you checked. Take care

3macs1, I've just had a look at the Remington web site (http://www.remington.com/pages/supp...emington-original-factory-barrels-tables.aspx) Listed there is part #24606. I have written to Remington to ask if the barrel is compatible with my gun. I'll let you know what they say when I get a reply. The best choice for me may be to have the full choke opened to IC which I can have done in Ottawa for $40. Later, Rob

That barrel will not fit your 20ga it is for a lightweight frame.
Here is the details on a 24606
. Believe me I have a couple of these large frame 20ga and if there was a rem choked barrel for them I would have it. One is a skeet gun part of a 4 gun 870 wingmaster set I started shooting in the 60's before switching to the 1100's.
Here is the rem specs
Remington Barrel Remington 870 Wingmaster 20 Gauge (Except Pre-1974 with Serial Number Ending in N or X) 3" 28" Rem Choke Vent Rib (Bradley Front Sight and Middle Bead) Blue
Product #: 375231 Remington #: 24606 UPC #: 00004770024606

Hello again 3macs. From what you tell me, I may have to send my barrel to Briley for installation of screw-in chokes. Do you have any experience or knowledge about sending a barrel to the USA, and GETTING IT BACK WITHOUT ANY BORDER ISSUES?
Other options: try to find a used barrel, or have my full choke barrel bored out.

Thx, Rob

Hi :
I have sent many to briley in the US over the years since I could not get tubes put in 410. 28 or 16ga in canada when I was looking to get it done probally still cannot.
Now it is much easier to get Briley to do the work since you can send your barrel through their canadian distributor Lawry's I believe for the same cost.
http://w w w.briley.com/internationalcustomers.aspx
On used there has been one 20ga large frame fixed choke barrel on the EE since I joined about 2 1/2 years ago but it will be double the cost of a light weight. They are very rare, in fact I think he still has it and maybe he will PM you
Also with 20ga there is probally many smiths in canada that can do the work for you Like Epps etc.
