So im walking through Princess Auto today in Hamilton and stroll by the air gun section and there is a employee(teenager) showing a bb handgun to a customer and i hear the customer ask if it co2 or pump and the employee says i dont know. So he doesnt ask another employee he just starts playing around with it and doesnt he pull the trigger and discharge a bb. Luckily there was no one across the aisle but it ricocheted off the next aisle rack and right past me. First off all why was this thing loaded and second of all why the hell do they have unexperienced staff handling firearms(i know its not technically a firearm) in a public area when they cant even tell if it is loaded. They could have ended up with a big lawsuit on there hands but luckily nobody was hit and i think it scared him enough to get help from another employee and knoe btter for next time. Also i seen this employee come out of the back with it and say its the last one so was this reason it is loaded because employees were shooting in the back? Either way this kind of think should not happen and they need to train there employees better. Also is a bb gun allowed to be loaded in a retail store?

A BB gun is not a firearm and not subject to the same laws. There are some exceptions, like where it comes to pointing one at a person, you can be charged for that be it empty or loaded. I see my princess auto sells replicas(all black airsoft) as well as AK-47 marked BB guns, would these not be prohibited by name?? LOL

Common sense would dictate, absolutely not !
Most cities have by-laws prohibiting discharge of any gun. BB or otherwise, within city limits, so I suspect that the discharge that you witnessed probably contravened that by-law at the very least.
I also strongly suspect that if a customer had pressed the issue, and police were called, that employee could have been slapped with any number of charges relating to unsafe discharge.
The store manager should have at least been notified as well.

Glad to hear that no one was injured.

North-east end of the Hammer, there is all the explaination needed. Seriously, I would mention it to the Manager.

Wow, you must be retired. Because you seems to have a lot of spare time to spend worrying about nothing!

So I informed the manager and spoke with head office now im just waiting awaiting a respose to tell me what they are going to do about it and how they are going to prevent this from happening again.

Probably not carry air guns any longer.

So much for Princess Auto carrying air guns any more. I think I would have handled it a little more subtly and just spoke to the manager at the particular store.

When will the rampant spree bb shootings end!? What can we do to stop them, short of banning round metal balls!? Oh the humanity, when will horrors cease?! Where are we safe ?!!!!

Chill out. BB gun, and a bad safety moment. Ever been to a construction site? Chastise the guy, and move on.

Enough with the sarcasm guys were all adults here grow up. Ok so no one was injured and nothing really happened i get this, but what if. I take my kids with me sometimes and heaven forbid something like this happens and hit one of them or anybody for that matter. Is that serious enough for you guys then. Sure its only a bb but if its hits you in the right spot they can do alot of damage. Im just trying to prevent this from happening again in the future thats all. Im not a rat or trying to get anyone fired im just a concerned citizen looking out for the well being of all of us. Also i dont blame the kid and hes not getting fired but if he had been trained properly on how to handle these things safely this likely would have never happened. I blame the training not him. I told the store manager and they had head office call me and they are the ones who offered to call me back. And they are not going to stop selling bb guns or soft air they are just going to train the staff better and make them more aware. If you have a smart@ss comment take it else where and GROW THE F UP

So, now that the OP has clarified that all he did was to simply speak with the store manager, and it was the store manager that contacted the head office, I guess there is no need for a gallows?

Sadly, it seems that all too many gun owners are still of the (mistaken) opinion that airguns/BB guns are "toys" and not to be taken seriously.
Just do a Google search for "BB gun deaths" and see just how deadly these "toys" can be if abused - especially when dad refers to it as a "toy gun".
And therin lies the problem. As the OP states - proper training in safe handling is the key - it matters not if it is a BB gun or a .45 auto.

Somehow, I tend to think that if the OP were to substitute even ".22 RF pistol" in place of "BB pistol", the response from some would have been dramatically different.

Relax, it was a kid who f'd up with a little BB gun. Yes someone could have gotten a little red welt but let's not blow things out of proportion.

I think you'll find that most air gun deaths are not from the sub-500fps Canadian verity.

If nobody got hurt, I would have explained the serious nature of the act to the kid. If he was accepting of the knowledge put forth, leave it at that, If he were to blow it off or dimiss me....manager time.
