Plugged Pistol

I have a old Colt .38 revolver. It was my grandfathers police gun. Somewhere along the way, someone had it plugged. Is it possible to correct this? I realize it would be a big job, but how big?
 
what is it plugged with? It was fairly common to pour lead down the barrel and while it might damage the finish, you can heat the barrel and melt the lead out again

I am not sure. Almost looks like it was welded. Although the blueing looks fine. So if it was, I suspect they did not penetrate very deep into the gun metal.

Don't you think a gunsmith should look at it and tell you if it is possible of practical or legal?

If it was a police revolver it was probably classified as prohibited. If it was deactivated and given to your grandfather it was never registered and can not be "created" today. If it was correctly deactivated more than just the barrel was plugged and it will not be practical to try and make a functioning revolver. If it was given to your grandfather as a functional revolver it will have a registration certificate and he would have had to re-register it in 1990's and have kept a valid firearms license continuously to this day.
 
Yep it was the barrel and the cylinder. I believe it was done at or through a gun shop in Edmonton. Perhaps if the barrel was fixed, I could get a replacement cylinder? I will take it to a Gun Smith one day, but there is not one in my town. It will probably have to wait until the next time I am in Calgary. Does anybody know of a good Gun Smith in Calgary or Lethbridge area?

I didn't even realize that it might have been a prohibited gun. It is a Colt "Police Positive" .38. My Grandfather passed away back in 1994. I don't think it would have been registered (not in his nature) but it may have been. Now you got the gears turning in my head. I will have to make some more enquiries. If I get it unplugged and functional again, is there anyway I could use it to get a prohibited license?
 
You can't get a 12/6 now , many posts on this .
Is it a 4 inch barrel?, If so a pain in the rear getting
it registered. If over 106mm - about 4 1/4", no problem
 
The CFC has variable stories about registering restricted handguns for the first time. They told me a year or more ago, that the current registry is for long guns only. On the other hand I think others have posted that they were able to register a previously unregistered handgun. If the barrel is under the minimum, you are out of luck unless you rebarreled the gun to restricted length.

Sounds like this is how they "deactivated" firearms in the old days .... Seen a few of those here and there. Trying to undo such "deactivation" would be unwise IMO .... ;)
