Sorry if this has been asked before and it may be a silly question, and before I ask I do realize that this would all depend in the abilities of the particular gunsmith.. here it goes..

Does a gunsmith have the ability to create a barrel of the same or better quality as compared to a shilen select match barrel? And at what cost generally.. I believe I will be in need of a new barrel (see my "oops" thread in the precision rifle forum) if everything else checks out to be perfect, so I'm considering getting a shilen drop in for my savage model 12 but am told there is a 5-6 month waiting period.. So was considering asking to have my gunsmith make one for me instead as I would have it much sooner.. Now this gunsmith does make custom 1 off rifles in his shop and has a full machine shop in house.. Just looking for your thoughts on the topic..

Is your gunsmith a barrel maker? It takes some very specialized talent and equipment to make barrels, far more so than what any well equipped gunsmith or machineshop would have. If he does not make barrels himself, he has to wait in line like everyone else to get a contoured blank.

Having a smith chamber, crown and thread a barrel blank cost me ~$200 for the labor if I recalled correctly. My Broughton barrel blank finished@30.75" was $500 or so but ordered to the correct barrel diameter for prefit threading for savage small shank. I had my own reamer so it will make a better cut then maybe one of the factory reamers which may have dulled cutting a few more barrels. Depending on the barrel profile you want and diameter you need you may still have to wait. I waited 4-5 months for my blank from Broughton.

as Blastattack said, there are VERY FEW smiths in canada that actually make barrels. if you dont mind me asking, who did you plan to use? then we can tell you for sure if you/ he will be waiting in line for a blank , unless he has one in stock.. or if he is one of the very few barrel makers, that you will still be waiting in line for him to make one..

it took 13 months to get my kreiger and both my broughtens were 5ish months
