I have recently ran into some financial difficulties and obligations :( and I have to face a disturbing reality...I will have to sell all of my rifles  and replace them with one that I can use for hunting deer, and the occasional moose but I want it to be handy enough to use while dirtbiking/hiking. I know the "one rifle" topic has probably been beaten to death 1000 times but I would really appreciate the suggestions and advice of fellow CGNer's

Thanks Alot Guys

Get a stevens 200 or one of the new mossberg rifles for 299.00 in 30-06 will kill anything on this continent and won't break the bank and you have a new rifle :D

Yeah, what CamK said, or buy one of the dozens of great used rifles off this site. If I could only shoot one calibre, I would get a 3006 or 7mm rem mag.

Consider the M305. $400 rifle that will eat cheap surplus and take anything in the woods, bit heavy though.

A nice Lee Enfield would be another good choice. A 45/70 guide gun would be more portable, but the ammo costs $$.

Anything but a 710!
The Stevens is a good buy, but if you want to dirtbike, you may want to hunt for a 788 in .308 with the 18" barrel...

Based on your portability criteria I would go with:

1. Marlin guide gun 45/70 (good for BC bears, if they get too nosy)
2. Win 94 or Marlin 336 in 30-30.

I can't believe that I just suggested 2 lever guns, I've gotta go take a shower. Ick. :|

So, how many rifles are you selling, and for how much? I've checked in the "for sale" cats, and maybe I missed your post?
Anyway, anything in 30-06, 7 mm Rem Mag, or 300 WM will do the trick for you.

Hey, kids, don't disdain the lovely .358 calibre. 8)

.300 win mag and i would look for a good used set up.
or a savage or stevens modle rifle.
i like the .300 win mag because you wont be underguned when hunting anything in the north america and if you a not so shure of recoil you can always dile back the load and bullet weight.
talk to ya all later

PS. this is my 200th post!!!!! :D

If I had to choose ONE rifle to do it all, it'd be the 399$ Marstar M14... That sucker WILL do it all from game animals to when the #### hits the fan!!!

Cheers
Jay

I'de ahve to go with the 30-06, bolt action, good for almost everything.

I just saw an advert in the SIR fall flyer for those new stevens rifles, I'm guessing its a savage product, price is very reasonable, any reviews

I was in the same position, hate to say I sold my dirt bikes. The last four times the dirt bike lost, but if that's you transportation too, maybe not.

Get a 30-06 bolt action and never look back.

I don't understand why people think these guns are so good for hunting. They're HEAVY, require special mounts for scopes, don't handle well
or w/o scopes. These are military style rifles that have a bunch of COOL factor and that's about it. Great for tinkering with, range shooting and maybe the occasional trip to the tree stand, but for all around hunting, NOT! ............. I owned one, used it once @ the range and promptly sold it as it was very apparent that it wasn't going to be my new fave hunting gun.

A Lee Enfield w/a a good scope mount and an aftermarket stock (w/a higher comb) makes a WAY better hunting rig and be a bit less expensive.

grab a good used lever action 30-30 or a cheap Rem pump in a common cartridge (270,308 or 30-06).

I haven't seen a rifle rack on a dirt bike...got a pic? :D

If you want a new one, a Savage package gun in 308.
If that is too much, try buying a Winchester 94 used, or something similar. Maybe not a BLING gun, but it will get you through deer for certain.
If you are serious about moose, hit a local store and look for a cheap 308 or 3006, sometimes used Rem 700s can be had quite cheaply.

Avoid a 742, or Norc 305. bad choices if money is tight.

Look for a used savage package gun if you can, save a few dollars that way as well.
