Pmags worth the money? Or just black gun fashion?

Are p-mags really that great? I've handled them, but I've never used them in my rifles. I bought a few STANAG mags from SFRC, and they're mint. The follower slides smoothly, they're very solid, and feed perfectly. Are pmags just an aesthetics thing? I agree they look cool, but what advantages justify the premium?

I was a militia bum for four years in the late '90's, and we were in the midst of switching over from plastic mags that looked a lot like the pmags. You'd go prone in the winter, or climbing out of cover and you'd bang the mag and it would smash, piñata style, and you'd be picking rounds out of the snow. They were worthless in the C9, although it choked a bit on any mag really. My experience with the plastic mags was limited, as the days the plastic Mags were around, I was playing more floor hockey on parade nights than shooting. I'm sure the polymer now is better.

PMAGS have the reputation they have for function.... not fashion.. that, and now that everything is somewhat back to normal, PMAGS are pretty much the same price as the USGI ones.

I would be more concerned about dropping some of the metal mags on the ground than dropping a Pmag. Some of those metal mags feel VERY light and flimsy. I like how you grip a Pmag as well... its very tactile.

On the other hand, I may pick up 2 or 3 metal mags just to have around. Pmags wont fit in a T97 so having a few metal 5 rounders might be useful

Cheers guys, I'm always wary of stuff that's too tacticool. I just got my tavor from wolverine, and after seeing all the tavor pics with p mags, I think I'm going to grab a half dozen or so.

Wanstall's, Questar, and Wolverine all have good deals on these. Average about $20 mag for Gen3, and alittle lower for Gen2.

The last 10 gen 2 pmags i got for $16.99 each, so yes they are worth the money.

They seem to work just great in my 2 ar's, mvp, su-16, xcr-m, and t97.

I have dropped a few on hard surface and they have not shattered.

The only downside to Pmags is that they don't make an AR pistol mag that holds 10 rounds. Maybe in the not too distant future one will show up on the market.

I've actually managed to avoid using Pmags. At first it was the cost, then when the cost came down it was the concern over using them in systems other than an AR. There were rumours of bolt lift and damage to some rifles such such as the Tavor. I use my mags in all my rifles. AR, Tavor and soon a T97. So then the Gen3 mag is about to come out, but the craziness in the States begins and prices go wild. Now prices are back to normal and the Gen3 mags aren't too hard to find plus are coming down in price. But... they don't drop free in the T97. So again no Pmags for me.

That being said I bought about 20 D&H mags just before the craziness. $15.90 each for them. Tethlon coated, anti tilt follower and seem to work in everything very well. Those with the T97 (mine is still in the mail) say they work great and drop free. So I'm glad in my case I've gone with the D&H mags. I have a couple LAR mags as well for when I want 10 rounds. No doubt 50 Beuwolf will be more popular as prices drop with those mags as well. But for now I have some good stuff to hold out until the Pmag is what I'm looking for. I will buy some at one point but every time I get close something comes up.

PMags aren't just polymer fashion bits.
Not all polymer mags are created equal. Not to sound like Magpul fanboy, but seriously their mags are tested very rigorously and do have certain advantages over GI.
And, barring Traitor-In-Chief-related panics, the price is not that much higher than GI mags.
