So, my main hunting partner manages a horse farm on The Gore Road just north of Patterson Side Road in Caledon. It's about 250 acres and mostly wooded.

Last fall, about a week before the fall turkey season opened, three turkey were poached from the property and my friend believes he knows who did it. Additionally he found blood trails indicating deer had been taken as well. While we don't know for sure we suspect they may be using bows as well as guns, depending on circumstance.

This morning at about 6:00 am while listening to the old tom gobble, he heard what was clearly a box call making hen calls. This is from his bedroom window so whoever was doing it had to have been clearly on the farm property. He was out the door like a flash, trying to spook both the birds and the poachers. Called the police and they contacted the CO who got out there fairly quickly.

My friend is pretty sure there is a black pick-up involved and co-incidentally, a neighbor he suspects as being involved, as the properties abut, just happened to have a black pick-up in the driveway this morning

Any help identifying those involved in this illegal activity would be appreciated and if you know who it is but don't want to turn them in, you should probably tell them it will be an unrelenting hunt to catch them in the act. Given the deer situation, the CO has already asked if my friend would be okay with authorizing a sting operation of the property.

If you are waffling, it is these people and this type of activity that give hunters a bad reputation with the non hunting community.

If someone does know the person(s) involved they'll be glad you provided this little tidbit .

We talked about that before I posted. I am trying to strike the balance between getting them to stop/leave and catching them. Personally I put little faith in them getting caught AND having a successful prosecution. The bar is high. I just want them gone.

I want them to know their best course of action is to stop and part of the reason for that is I believe in this case it's a crime of opportunity. Previous manager of farm was not attentive. Properties abut so easy access. Game abounds. No consequences in the past. Now there are. The manager of the farm and the owner of the farm are serious about stopping it.

It is now a new day and they will be caught if they persist. Better to just stop.

That's a shame. There are plenty of turkeys out there...why people stoop to shooting them out of season or on someone else's property is beyond me. :(

He should have just called the MNR to begin with. If the alleged poacher has had some warning, it'll just make it harder to catch him in the future.

With opening day tomorrow morning, he wanted to protect the couple of big toms we've been eying for the last month. Can't say I blame him. Just loading up the truck with guns and turkey gear to head over.

The Fudge .... i live right across the junk yard, don't fekk get me arrested.
Yeah, I hear/seen lots turkeys but we have lots of lands to hunt around.

Indeed. I was the sole witness in a case of Wood Bison poaching a little while ago. I went in and met them, snapped a couple pics discretely, and the COs met them later on and a truck was confiscated. If you're really out to stop them, get the COs involved quietly and let them do their job. Poachers will continue poaching if they think nobody cares what they're up to, and the COs need them red handed. One bit of warning or pressure and the evidence will be dumped. Let them feel comfortable til the CO's arrive and they'll get the book, as citizens we are powerless anyhow.

Seriously the ignorance and stupidity of some people is really shocking. My brother inlaw ran in to a fellow while he was out scouting this am. He had a full Turkey decoy spread and was actually hunting. When my brother inlaw asked are you hunting he said "ya season opened on the 25th" my brother in law then tried to explain it opened on the 27 as the 25th was a Saturday. He replied "no I checked" ......really come on pretty f'n sad if you ask me! My brother inlaw laughed a said whatever you think fella. Hope you don't get caught! I think he should have called C O but he didn't bother!

There are also trail cameras (expensive ones) that upload the pictures over a cell network to a website, etc. That would be kind of hard to get around, and then you could also nail them for theft as well.
