I have several deer hunting rifles (308, 30-06, 35Rem, 30-30) that I use on a random basis every deer season. I decided that this year I will add my Mini 30 to that collection. The Mini is my 30 cal centre fire plinking toy and had been sighted in with Federal AE 124g FMJ. For hunting purposes I sighted it with the Sellier and Bellot 123g soft point ammunition and I have been shooting it regularly with that ammunition for the past month. It consistently shoots a 2 1/2 group off hand at 100 yards. Last week I decided to try some Federal Fusion 123g soft points. They grouped 4" low and 3" left of where the S&B was hitting. I know that different ammunition will perform differently in the same gun but I was actually surprised at the extent of difference between the Fusion and S&B cartridges. Its always a good exercise to shoot different ammunition from a rifle. I think the Fusion might have a better performing deer bullet than the S&B, but I have more of the S&B so it will be the ammunition I will use.

Yes, you change anything, you changed everything.

I've shot 140 grain factory ammo in a 6.5x55 and then shot some 140 grain Swedish surplus right after, and the surplus was hitting about 13" higher at 100 yards. Same rifle, same shooter, same day, ....

Same here. 7.62x51 FMJ 147gr, Norinco and TulAmmo, stayed on paper but grouped about 6"-8" apart. I find rimfire is even worse depending on the brand. I need a collection of scope turret caps with pre-set zeros. ;)

Yes all brands will group different. Sight in with the ammo you are planing on using huntin. Personally I have to say that 2.5 at 100 offhand is some good shooting.

I completely agree. The only free-hand shooting I do today is in a gopher field with a 10/22 and they're 25yds away. I can usually hit them, but at 50, they'll be complete misses (or blind luck) so I don't take them.

OP, I usually use lots of surplus ammo when I am going to use any rifle chambered to x39mm to learn the rifle. Then I switch to tailored ammo for the hunt. Re-sight the rifle and go hunting.
