Polar Bear Hunting Critized In Australian Sunday Paper

Hi I'm from Queensland Australia and just read in the Brisbane Sunday paper, "The Sunday Mail" see http://www.thesundaymail.news.com.au/, a twisted article condemning Polar Bear hunting called "This Barbarity is called sport" on page 24 by Jane Fryer. Upon doing a little surfing on the net I found a similar article punblised by the Sun newspaper in the UK, see http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005590173,00.html. Once again the cheapest form of journalism is to pick up an article from someone else that is likely to create a sensation and appeal to simplicity of the masses.

On searching the web a bit on Polar Bears it appears that toxic poisoning (from Europe and the US) and global warming causing the ice caps to melt are a far greater concern to the scientists who really know than this "barbarity" called trophy hunting that probably singled handedly contributes more to polar bear conservation and management than anything else.

I would be interested in hearing from any of those really informed people (hunters/guides/outfitters) in Canada (or anywhere else where polar bears are legally hunted) on the real facts of polar bear numbers, hunting and conservation/management.

Cheers & God bless,
Magnum

Given how much trouble you have to go to to hunt a polar bear, I'd say the population is pretty safe from hunters. Changing climate would be a bigger threat.

Polar bears are not endangered... and the permits to hunt them are given out only with consideration for the numbers and the biological science of the species.

Sounds like they're just trying to justify their oh so civilised gun laws, by painting shooters as knuckle dragging louts.

Frankly I agree, all polar bear hunting in Australia should be banned. :)

Plus it should be illegal to kill a shark or Kangaroo.

Colin, savagefan, you guys just made me blow beer bubbles out my nose. LMFAO.
We should send them a few brown bears and see if they change their mind on that...

Guess that article was'nt written by a seal?;)

Of all the aspects of our environment, game animals are about the only thing that is managed with any degree of concern for sustainability. Game managers are also much more likely to apply a precautionary approach to thier work then are those involved in regulating habitat development/destruction.

Aside from some seabirds on the eastcoast I can't think of any species in Canada hunted to extinction since the giant sloth, Please correct me if I am wrong.

Too bad we could'nt take all that apathy people have toward charismatic mega fauna and direct it toward something aside from taking hunters out of the woods/tundra/ice. No hunters means no provincial/federal money for research and monitoring.

Best regards to all those down under.
D

I recall reading that the tags in the NWT are given to the Inuit (proper name for "Eskimo"), who then charge BIG bucks to guide hunts. So it is a very good revenue source. Also, all hunts are "Traditional", meaning with dogsled. No snowmobiles. Did the article mention that?

Thanks guys. Keep the comments coming.

Ther are no political allies of the hunters and gun owners in Australia. A number of years ago the first gun confiscation (sorry, buy back) had bipartisan support and was rushed through the state legislatures (the powers of the Federal Government are determined by the Constitution, with the residual powers vested in the states) with amazing speed.

Such has been the (government's) assault on society's view of gun owners and hunters (since then) that politically we have no friends in high places. Duck Hunting was recently banned in my home state (see the game management ideology of this government at http://statements.cabinet.qld.gov.au/cgi-bin/display-statement.pl?id=8023&db=media ).

I'm thinking of immigrating to Canada, what's the hunting like there?

Cheers & God bless,
Magnum

Oh I better don't start ... but what I think about that article and some other things is not very nice.......... unreal.
What is the situation in New Zealand? Same ....... better, worst?

i remember when i told this american gal when i was on a trip that i was sad that iwas going to miss the spring polar bear hunt in toronto that year and i was really sad and on top of that i just set my poor old dad out on an iceflow that fallbecause he was no longer useful. what do people in australia know of polar bears and canada. what abunch of hooey

Unfortunately, Manitoba tags which do not get used either in defence kills or research kills go to Nunavut. I would like to see a hunt here, but the folks who make a living showing bears to the tourists are opposed. The concept that the two activities are compatable is not accepted. There are many Austrialian visitors here each year to view the bears from the buggies - it is understandable that they might come away from here with the type of mind set shown. There is however no reason why a limited hunt could not be sustainable, and those tags are given out with the understanding that they will all be used.

On a related topic, I don't know how many people realize it, but hunters from Greenland often cross the ice to Ellesmere and take bears from our population. Maybe we need to remember that, when we ask why we are worried about a rock in the arctic which may or may not belong to Denmark.

Plenty of ducks here :D

Yes lets send them some Brown bears!
Imagine a group of brown bears looking at mountains of rabbits dotting the landscape.:D

This news paper BTW was the same "news" agency a few years back that has a staff writer that wrote a article on how she wanted to see all of the Pitbulls they have banned, and other homeless dogs sent to Asia as food. :eek :(

Hypocrisy!
:mad

Can't go wrong moving to Canada mate (I left Brisbane 6 months ago myself and set up shop here)! Just gotta watch the bloody cold - and yes i realise you manitobans are having a "mild" winter so far.

Being use to only bolt action rifles and side-by-side or over-under shotties in Auz, what you can legally purchase in Canada made my eyes water when I arrived! So much choice.......so little funds.......sigh. Also the hoops you have to jump through in Australia to get licensed are non-existant here.
And the hunting potential - fantastic (just got to get off my ass and get out there myself).

Enjoy a ###X for me (they cost $6 a stubbie here):(
