Hey guys and gals. With the possibility of getting locked in with my current collection, I have a question regarding the quality of the Taurus PT92's compared to the police surplus of the Beretta 92

Apparently they were made in the same factory, but does anyone have hands on experience with each type?

Does the fact that Italy took away the contract instantly make the build and fit and finish go down in quality when the Brazilian government took over the factory?

Basically, I have a Taurus that has filled the niche for me of the cool gun I always wanted....but now I'm wondering if I should get a real Beretta so that it lasts longer

(I have the Taurus beside the Norinco that I bought during the first scramble to try and find a gun on the shelf and wow....the Chinese made stuff is lacking compared to the knock off Beretta I have....it makes me wonder if the real Beretta is that much better)

Thanks for your time if you actually have experience and true feedback, but obviously opinions are worth posting to keep this up in the feed haha

I would keep the PT92 over a 92s, Its a much more modern gun than the 92s, has a modern thumb button mag release as opposed to a push button heel release, and the Taurus over the Beretta also has much better control functions being on the frame vs the slide, I love the Frame mounted safety/decocker, its the main reason I've kept the Taurus over a 92f, And definitely over a 92s. That being said, The 92s is a great price and still a nice gun, Add one to the collection while you can.

I would tend to agree with CraigOry for the reasons he has stated. The Taurus 92s are certainly not lacking in the quality dept and simple fact that the surplus Beretta's have a heal release is a non starter for me.
If a PT92 were to show up on the EE at a decent price I would scoop it up.

If you are a Beretta fan, buy the surplus one. It is my understanding that the Tauris are indeed fine guns, but the surplus one is a historic piece and cool in and of itself. If the future looked brighter for our sport, I would buy one as surplus stuff always goes up in price, but presently, I have trimmed my collection so my wife has less high priced scrap to give the cops when I croak.
FFS.

Here endeth the rant.

I've owned a Taurus 92 for years and had no issues with it, it was a great gun.

A local gun shop/range had one they used to rent out, so it saw a LOT of use, again never had an issue with it.

They are excellent guns and at a good price.

Like Pirate604 said, it one were to show up at a sensible price, I'd buy it in a blink also.

One other consideration is availability of magazines. Taurus magazines are available at various retailers but I've not seen spare magazines for the police surplus Berettas, unlike the 92A1 and 92FS models.

Beretta because you will need to buy parts in
the future to keep it going
Beretta magazines will be available on
the surplus and commercial markets

The magazine release is really no issue when you get used to it. Of course you have to use your left hand.

Some are saying that the Beretta is heavy - which is true, but yesterday my partner and me took out the surplus Beretta and a brand new Glock 48, guess what. She liked the Beretta more, less recoil and faster target acquisition than the Glock 48 - which is a very light gun. I had to confirm her statement a few times. No experience with the Taurus.

This is my Beretta story. I went on a mission I was going to collect a bunch of former military guns. I started with the Beretta 92F I think, it was surplus Italian I think, like $500. I shot the gun and it shot well but it had a tiny front sight, I hated that and it was really hard to change out the front sight. So I got rid of that gun and went with the 92A1 I think. It had a different sight, this gun was fine but than I found a deal on the M9A3, this is the gold one in the fancy box. So I bought this gun and sold the 92A1. Bottom line is I could not hit the broad side of a barn with either of these last two guns. It is me, not the gun. I ended up selling almost all my military collection.

I like most any gun more than Glock's, OK ,OK I hear the screams in the back ground, They just feel wrong to me.
But 99% of my guns are heavy steel and nice wood with some class.
I had the surplus 92's They where all in nice shape, looked like new barrels, heal mag don't bother me, small sight does, and I find the grips too smooth and big for me.
Yrs ago I had a newer model, never used it much. But it worked fine.
Surplus guns, I really like the Jericho 941's they just feel right to me.

Another option could be the Girsan Regard MC. A Turkish made 92 clone. Though I personally went with the Beretta 92S because briefly Ellwood Epps had them for $411. It was hard to say no to a $400 Beretta.
