Police visits while shooting - Looking for new place to toss rocks

Being the OP, can I hijack my own thread? Either way, I'm going to.

I'm going to start with a little warning, this post is going to sound pro government... shocking!

It is silly when people talk about having the right to a subsistence lifestyle; "Living off the land and hunting as our god given right". That is not entirely true. We live in a society. And as much as one might believe they have the right to not participate in certain aspects of society, that is not entirely true. We are alive in the vast numbers that we have grace to the society we live in.

Look at the numbers. There's a simple population study based on fox and hare populations; google it if you like. The gist of it is that the predator's population follows that of the prey. Also, the prey's population must be superior to the predator's... by about an order of magnitude (x10). There's less than half a million deer in Ontario, I'm pretty sure there's more than 50,000 humans. Alberta estimates a quarter million deer, which could support a predator population of 25,000.

Moral of the story, chances are the majority of us exist because society has streamlined processes to provide subsidence for the masses. An individual does not have the right to reap the benefits of something to then not pay the price of that thing. And that's the sad reality, so make the best of it.

So what you're really saying is that were overpopulated for our natural resources.

So what you're really saying is that were overpopulated for our natural resources.

That depends on the definition of natural resources.

Trees are a natural resource. Timber planks are how they were traditionally harvested. Those days are gone. Now the industry is moving towards Engineered Timber such as Glulam and CLT, which is more sustainable (instead of cutting old growth, we're harvesting from "farms" of trees planted within our generation). It's still natural... we've just harvested it differently.

But yes, if you're saying that natural resources can only be obtained by traditional methods (hunting); then yes, we have far outgrown our planet.

I would like to state that I am not against regulated hunting for sport.

I dont get what the issue is, the police showed up nothing happened so now you have to shoot somewhere else?

I use to shoot with a guy who use to say it's best not to draw the attention of THE MAN. I use to think that was silly, but ten years on I can see his point. I'll spare you the tale, just add that the outcome really shook my confidence in the idea of justice. I now operate under the assumption that if they are checking me out for some reason it's prudent to move on. In my case I've had an unmarked SUV watch me shoot for a bit, but it was winter and there is a very high incidence of property crime in this area from Thanksgiving to May 24, so I'm sure it was a chance encounter. If I thought otherwise I wouldn't go back there again.

No no no... No real issue. I was simply relating a story of my recent experience. Take the good, and the bad from that story. Anyone who hasn't shot on crown land (new) and is concerned about what may happen can take this experience if they read it. Nothing major.

As for a new place to shoot... I've wanted a better place for a while now for a multitude of reasons. This little spit of land is simply the best (read only) available. This run in with the cops is simply another reason. I know there are people from Ottawa on this forum who have good stretches of private property... I was hoping they would read this because I'm too shy to directly ask. :)

Cops showed and you want a new place to shoot?

Cops show up every time I shoot a centerfire rifle

Fair. And my wife hates clothing. She loves being naked. She's allowed by law to walk the streets of Ontario topless. Men would stare, a lot, women too for that matter. As much as she would love a bit of the attention, she would get annoyed fairly quick. So, she wears a top.

I've yet to see anyone post or reply with good locations to shoot. You might get a PM from one or two if you're near by and lucky but for most we've searched long and hard for good, safe, places and don't want to lose them by over shooting or a$$hats going and messing things up. The OPP or MNRF will close off sites if enough complaints come in, regardless of rights, if garbage, locals, or poaching becomes an issue.

I've shared places with friends in the past only to find out they return on their own and leave targets, shells, and food garbage behind. (He said it was another buddy who left the mess but this also means he shared it with yet another and didn't clean up after him.)

I like to share my hobby but expect other to look after my stuff and the sites I go to. If they don't I don't invite them back. Too many people feel entitled and don't take responsibility and look after things. I always try to leave the place a little better/cleaner than how I found it.

Also with ATV and snowmobiles running all over crown land these days finding a place that's at least reasonably safe to shoot has gotten harder. Then they try to get you removed as if they own the land. General use allows us all the right to share it with first-come-first-served being the general rule but some don't see it that way. So you might see why sharing a secret spot with you could be a while. ;)

Just my observations.

You'll have to be a little more specific to WHERE you want to shoot. You're in Ontario, but the where in this case matters. I'm originally from Northern Ontario, and a "Good location to shoot" means an infinite number of places within a 15 minute drive. Nothing but Crown Land as far as the eye can see. Down south things are a little different.

OK Cool thanks

I was addressing my reply to the OP as I have a spot or two, for now at least. He's in Ottawa going by his profile.

Leaving garbage on crown land isn't a firearm problem, it's a littering problem.

Completely true. 100% agree.

However, enforcement. To stop the littering with littering laws... well... the person has to be caught red handed and the fine isn't that hefty at I think $1000? To stop the littering from those particular people without having to catch them actually leaving garbage at all... well... all that has to be done is change the designation of the land. And one step further... if you can catch them red handed, and you have things set up legally to nail them with poaching laws... well... That's a touch more than a grand ;)

I am not saying that this is the way it should be. I'm saying that this is an outcome to be weary of.

I guess I should be less shy with you.
