I recently acquired this gal for free from a buddy who is getting rid of almost all of his guns. (His wife never liked them).

He got it I believe new/mint in the late 80s. He definitely doesnt take care of his guns and never cleans or oils them.

This caused some minor rust in places..but the biggest problem with this Polish gal is that at some point before I knew him...during an argument..his wife but slammed this rifle cracking the stock. To make matters worse..he did a bubba repair with glue and staples.

Whats the best options regarding getting this stock looking better?

With the typical poor receiver to stock fit and the rather stout recoil from that gun I doubt any more aesthetically pleasing repair like glue only would hold up but you could try.

I'd try to source a new stock before anything else.

I own two of these rifles and those pics bring a tear to my eye. I would purchase a new stock for it and blast away!

I have a "few" M44's....and I shed a tear as well when I see that. I have seen many replacement M44 stocks in the States, which sadly does not help you as ITAR won't allow them out unless by a licensed exporter. I don't think that any of the exporters will have a stock in such condition to justify the purchase. Most I have seen are pretty well used/issued.
Boyd's does make, ATI has a monte carlo style and I've seen some nice "sporter wood" stocks as well. Few and far between.
Just a thought but since it's "pooched" get yourself an Archangel setup and shoot the hell outta it. HiCal has them, I have one and it's been a blast to shoot. Flame on if you wish but he might as well enjoy it!

I would buy a ATI stock. Alternatively you could buy a Russian M44 that has a poor beat up bore and steal her stock and refinish it for the Polish M44.

For best longevity epoxy bed the reciever to the new stock.
And its not like you 'll have an unmolested piece of histopry.

That is truely a sad repair. If he used proper wood glue and put it back together as it broke, clamped and set, it should hold up.
Now as for the unsightly staples. You could countersink them or cut off the heads as the glue will hold, see statement above.
Get some wood filler that matches the stock colour and carefully fill in the area. You could sand or scrap around the crack line and rub in some linseed oil. It may not be pretty but it may be structurly sound.

Polish M 44 stocks are like $60 in Poland shipping is around $40 however most Polish surplus stores are afraid to send any gun parts out of the country due to EU regulations
