I'm going to start by saying I know nothing about these rifles so please be kind! :p

My wife's grandfather passed away and I now find myself storing what I think is a 1953 Polish M44 that's missing its bayonet. No one knows anything about this rifle except that he traded a pig for it "way back when". So after searching through and drowning in countless pages of information here are my questions.

What is the current value of these rifles with matching serial numbers and no bayonet?
Can you find bayonets for them?
What do they shoot and where do I find it? 7.62X54r?
Is there meaning to all the little and hard to see stamped symbols under the serial number?
The stock is kind of dry, should it be refinished or leave it?
I doubt this rifle will ever leave my wife's family we are just curious as to what exactly is sitting in the safe.
Thanks!

There are no lugs but it doesn't look like anything has been cut off, there is a vertical groove on the right side of the barrel though.

All of the above. If the bayonet lugs are gone it could be worth as little as $150 and that is if the rest is in decent shape. If the lugs are there, it could be restored and in great condition could go for over $400.
If the lugs are gone then yes, I would refinish the stock and make it into a sweet little carbine that it could be. The markings all have meanings but we would have to see them in order to tell what they are. The ammo is cheap and plentiful and they are fun to shoot.

I'll try and get pictures up here shortly (I've never posted pictures here so it may take me a bit). I think its a Polish M44 as I used the 7.62x54r.net site and that's what I came up with. It has the diamond stamp and the circle with the 11 in it. Everything seems to match up with the Polish M44 except the lack of a bayonet. Maybe I'm missing something though, like I said I know nothing about these rifles.

I think I figured this picture thing out!

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to look into getting a bayonet for it and maybe touching up the stock with linseed oil to help preserve it, but it all comes down to what my sister-in-law wants to do with it as it was left to her. She told me to do as I wished with the bolt action shotgun he had (except sell it which never entered my mind), and asked me to look into this one for her as well as a Cooey Repeater he had. None of these guns are going anywhere the stories attached to them are just too funny and the sentimental value is just too high.
