My LGS has two unissued 1953 Wz.44s in stock for $375 each. I'm tempted to get one, but I'm worried about muzzle blast and "shootability" with such a short barrel. I'm used to my 91/30, but these seem really cool, too. Anybody have one and can say what it's like?

If you're really worried about muzzle blast, just load your own rounds with either a faster burning powder or use a lighter load

I could also use it for my lighter loads (SKS bullets work great in 7.62x54R) and save my 91/30 for the longer-range stuff. I'm starting to think I shouldn't be worried about it at all.

If it turns out you don't care for the rifle, they usually sell pretty quickly on the EE

The blast won't be a problem. Recoil seems a bit sharper, but with that bayonet on it doesn't weigh much less than a 91/30 so that's more imagined. I was given a muzzle break for one, and while it did seem to work, it didn't last (cheap ncstar thing I think).

I'm working on cast bullet loads now, and those are much more pleasant to shoot than surplus.

I'd love to grab an unissued m44 in the grease. Don't suppose your lgs sells online? ;)

I have such a rifle. Fun to shoot. Most people wonder what god forsaken canon I am shooting.
The concussion can be felt several 10's of meters away.
As for the recoil, it will help keep your ammo usage down. OR, get a spare but plate for a standard MN.
Ruff it up and epoxy a 1/2" block of a regular everyday flip flop, trim and paint with some rubberized under coating.
This will allow to shoot at least 30 rds before your shoulder turns that nice deep purple colour. It's a badge of honour.
The muzzel blast and concussion wave are a nice ice breaker as well as clearing away any debris on the ground in front of you.
See you in Prescott when you get you toy.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I was looking at the wz.44, a K11, and a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55. I ended up deciding that with what I would have paid for the Mosin, I could buy a Swedish Mauser, a full die set, two boxes of ammo and some bullets. That's what I went with.

If anybody wants to run into town and get them, they're in stock at Gunco on Colonnade Road.

Cheers.

I had one.

Cheap to shoot but a heavy rifle and the bayo is silly.

Mine was in pretty good shape and it unfortunatelynjustnwasnt accurate enough for my liking with surplus.

lol.....pretty sure when the Russians designed the rifle during WW2 they didn't find the bayonet one bit silly....doubt the German who found one buried in his belly up to the muzzle thought it was silly either.

You should have left the bayonet on.

Polish M-44"s have floating barrels, without the bayonet they don't shoot well.

the Polish M44 were built in the 1950s....I'm pretty sure WW2 was over by then

ever seen a Mosin Nagant M44 ? Notice any similarities ?

Regardless....even if the rifle had been designed in the '50s, which it was not, bayonets were still very much relevant in 1950s military tactics.

So, no....not silly.

Bayonets are still issued to modern armies. They are anything but silly.

And on the M44, very practical. Spear a few hotdogs on it and they're fully cooked after a full magazine.
