polish wz29 ?

I haven't actually pulled the bbl on one, but it's a copy of a Kar98az, if that helps, which is a small-ring 98 action with large-ring threads. that being said, the wz29 is a large-ring action, so it's not a totally faithful reproduction of the 98az. I would bet on large ring, large thread - like a K98k.

Step on me if I'm wrong, but did not Poland make Rifles AND Carbines (short rifles) BOTH? (Shootin' Arns wif 23- and 29-inch Bar'ls both) And they adopted them both in '29, too.

Up until then, they had been transferring everything to Radom, setting it up and refurbing all the German War One stuff they had been given.

They did get the tooling from the Prussian State Arsenal at Danzig and it was certainly tooled to build the Kar98aZ: they built mine in 1914.

What OTHER tooling Poland got, I have no idea, but it certainly would have been enough to build a Rifle as well as a (comparative) Shorty.

Spandau, Erfurt and Amberg all were stripped, and there must have been ACRES of tooling just at DWM - Berlin alone. SOME must have ended up in Poland.
 
Poland got tooling, yes. But every factory that built the K98az also built the Gew98, so both sets of tooling and gauges would have been available.

The az suffered frm receiver ring failures in the case of over-pressure accidents involving wartime ammo, bore obstructions, etc. and that is why the K98k went with a gew98 receiver instead of a kar small-ring receiver. I expect the Poles did the same.

Poland DID make some small-ring K98az carbines, but the WZ29 is a different animal and is large ring. I just can't say for certain is is also large shank threaded - though I assume it would be. The only large-ring 98 action with a small-shank barrel I know of is the Turkish M1903, and perhaps the Peruvian M1909 (?).
 
Turk 1903, Peruvian 1909, and Model 1907 are all large ring with small ring threads. Those are the only ones I know of.

wz29 should be a large ring and I would expect it to have large ring threads as well. Easy enough to tell if somebody has one in hand. You can tell by looking through the broach cut for the extractor or the inner "c" ring. I can post some pics of a comparison if any one is interested. No need to pull the barrel off.

I always found it interesting why they went with the large ring threads in a small ring receiver. I suppose it was to simplify barrel production but the fact is that the small ring dia combined with the large ring threads leaves a very thin receiver wall in that area. Pretty easy to see why a bore obstruction or similar incident could cause a receiver failure in this area with results probably similar to the fire damaged M98 sporter I blew up.

The poles made both small ring and large ring mausers. wz.98, wz.98a, wz.29 were all large ring. The Polish K98 was small ring. The wz.98 and wz.98a were both long rifles - where the K98 and wz.29 were carbines. The K98 was very similar to the Kar98AZ, and in fact made from the AZ tooling taken from Danzig.

So both large and small receivers were made, but the wz.29 only had large ring receivers. You wouldn't have to remove any wood to tell the difference.
 
I may want to add that many of the K98's were re-arsenaled to wz.29 configuration taking on the new designation of K98-29 so this variant would appear to be a wz.29 but would have a small ring.

Also, in the early 30's the wz.29 was called the K29 - but the name changed in '32 I believe. These designations would be stamped on the side rail.

Is there anyone up there who has a polish mauser wz.29 for sale or trade ??? Maybe for nice Ross or Springfield ;)
I have have a wz.29/40 overhauled by stayer to german specs it nice if someone collects those all matching numbers and mint condition but I'm after clean polish rile pre ww2
Any help would be appreciated !!
