If the interior of a receiver has a 'blacked' finish and you polish the feed ramp and remove some of that black finish is that bad ? Is there a negative to it Besides the finish looking bare? ( corrosion?)
Here is an example :

If you want to give it back the colour then wipe it down with some cold blue. Or just shoot a couple of mags and the soot will cover the spot.

There's no downside to leaving it shiny though. Yes it's at risk of rust but then so is the black finish on the rest of the barrel if you forget to oil it.

So I can just wipe this stuff on and it dries on and it's another layer of protection? Or is this stuff and similiar products just for looks ? Like does polished metal have more potential to rust then blued metal? Or if oiled it doesn't make a difference ?
Thx!

Bluing is like a controlled rusting or corrosion of metal that is black, cold blue is like a mild acid and the coloring is a chemical process not a coating that you apply layers. I'd just leave it and not worry about it oiling as usual, but it you want it black again, you would first clean the shiny part with alcohol, and then just use a q-tip and rub on some of the bluing solution, it pretty much works instant and as soon as it colors the metal wipe it off and apply oil to neutralize the chemical process. If you want to go all out heat the part with a hair dryer first as warm steel will cold blue better.

To answer your other question polished metal is easier to keep from rusting because the pores are smaller than a rough metal, also if it does rust a bit it is more surface like and easier to remove because of the fewer pores for rust to get into.

If I have to polish up or emery cloth a feed ramp or burr I leave them shiny. I don't recoat or apply anything , just leave it bare. I clean my guns after shooting and I've never had an issue with rust or anything. I wouldn't worry about it personally.

What can you polish with anyways ? 150 fine grit Sand paper works ?

Cool thanks , sounds like blueing is just a cosmetic thing then and a visual preference

Sandpaper for wood doesn't work that well. But either emery cloth or the black "Wetordry" sandpaper works well on metal. If you get the black wetordry I'd suggest 320 grit. A fresh patch of it cuts fairly aggresively but as the paper wears out the grit breaks down and it polishes up the work area nicely.

Cold blue isn't really a rust preventative. Instead it's a finish that aids a bit in holding the gun oil so the OIL can keep rust away. After applying the cold blue to totally degreased metal and it turns blue-black rinse the area with hot tap water. Dry then oil right away.

Cool thanks , I watched some YouTube vids as well
Thx, why does it seem really important to remove the Blueing agent ? Will it harm the metal if left on ?

Sometimes it will turn blotchy and turn a milky color if let on, if you just rub the part with a cloth or q-tip dampened with it not as bad, I usually wipe it off and oil it once I have the darkness I want.

I opted to leave it unblued - it's not like blueing it will protect it more so I don't mind that the ramp is shiney
