So I am going to be getting my old marlin 1893 case colour hardened. Parts need to be polished before hand. What grit paper do people recommend going up to 120 then 220 then 300 something up to 400? Wet or dry?

I don't. I pay Oskar the $25/hr and have home do a perfect job. He has the experience and knows what needs to be done, and how. One hour buys you a lot of polishing from him.

Awesome thanks when I was talking to him he said most people do it themselves but if he will do it then that's even better. Thanks again double gun appreciate it can't wait to get this gun looking sharp.

Yeah, I normally suggest doing as much as you can yourself, but in this case his rate is a bargain. And the polish job is everything when it comes to the final results.

Was talking to Oskar I am going to try polishing the parts to the best of my ability then when I bring him the gun he will determine if he needs to do any extra polishing or not.

It's not only the grits you use but how you back them up. The more highly polished you go the more important it is that the flats are really flat and the rounded portions are neatly done. So for the flat portions be sure to back up the abrasives with a hard flat backer. Using a file is often shown in books and videos. But the length of the file can cause you to rock on the edges if you're not careful. There's much to be said for a small block of metal with a flat face. Something around 2 x 1 x 1/2 in scrap steel. Wrap your emery cloth around this and work with it.
