If you do, you'll probably be re-bluing. ALL of the metal polishing should be done before the piece is blued. There are a lot of opinions about the extent of polishing. Some stop at 320 grit while others will go to a 600 grit. I usually stop at 400-600 then give the metal a good buffing with a gray(ultra-fine) 3M Scotch-Brit pad. This takes all the scratch marks off the metal.
After I finish a rust bluing job, I usually just give the metal a good buffing with paste wax.
If you're trying to get luster on the blued metal, try burnishing it witha paper towel. It takes some elbow grease, but it does work.Otherwise , as mauser98 says,it's all done before the bluing.
